So yesterday, I watched some youtube vids and read some guides how to perfect stick, and OMFG, I drove over to krogers in a civic, you could hear the transmission grind a couple times, but now I'm driving to Columbus in it! holy shit guys, some scary shit for you second time, any1 drive stick, and if so what kind of car and for how long?

oh lol. changing gear manually xD
I've learned how to do that with my left hand by sitting in the passenger seat...
now I need to learn it with the right hand for practical use xD

I stick shift since the start too, which is about a year ago haha...I only really drove my parents car, opel zaffira (mini van kinda car). Just make sure you got the clutch all the way down before you touch the shift stick, then give a bit of gas and slowly release the clutch.

the hardest part is getting going, once you do that your fine. just remember to push the clutch in past the friction point(dosen't have to be right to the floor when already moving).
i only stalled once my first time, But i grew up riding dirtbikes and such.

I drive a stick shift, it feels way better then driving an auto- in an auto i just dont get the same driving experience.
I've driven a renault megane hatchback and a toyota starlet.
And as XMoshe said, make sure you push the clutch down all the way, shift gears, and let it come up again.
You should try to let it come up very slowly once, so you get the feeling of where the actual point is where it starts working.

Lol, when I took lessons I stalled it like 5 times in a row cuz I let go of the clutch too fast, and I didn't know to put gas with it at the start >.> haha, but now it goes perfectly.

I'd love to drive one of those, semi manual...You gotta shift yourself but no need to use the clutch =D

How do you stall a manual car? Releasing the clutch too fast?
I want to learn stick after I drive auto for a year or two, stick saves on gas (Y)

the engine has to be engaged to the transmission for it not stall so put a lil gas in first then let go of the clutch, if u do it wrong, u shall stall

Get enough rpm (I think that's what it's called <--- car noob, like around 3k), put the clutch pedal down, shift the gear (the shift stick, a poke between you and your passenger next to you usually) from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 etc, put a little bit of gas and slowly release the clutch pedal.

Exactly as he said.
You can shift at basicly whatever RPM you like though (ofcource within certain extremes xD), if you want to drive efficiently you can shift at relatively low RPM if you like.
(I was tough to shift from 3 to 4 at 60, but if you're going to drive 50 for ages you might aswell shift to 4 at 50 km per hour)

Totally.
Also, @XMoshe: why wait 3k rpm? I usually switch gears at 2k, most 2.5k with my to-be Renault Clio (yeh, I still don't have a driving license, but I can legally drive with my dad sittin' beside me).

Does it matter if you shift at RPM or speed?

I was taught to shift based on the sound of the engine.

That's right. RPM gauge it's just a lil' more of help.

Not much, its actualy about RPM, but if you gradualy built speed shifting from 2 to 3 at 40, 3 to 4 at 60, 4 to 5 at 100 comes down to about the same RPM's in most cars.
Everyone developes their own driving style anyhow i guess ^^ it doesnt matter much EXACTLY when you shift.
And @ Master - waste of fuel xD guess it's ok when the engine is warmed up, but theres just no need to xD...

So is gear 1 considered neutral?
And what about down-shifting?
