I kind of doubt that he really doesn't know about the German language. It looks more like retrieval failure or a misunderstanding of his accent to me.

maybe he understood the word, but he didnt want to look like he was being a dick to the host. so he played it off like he didnt know the word rather than having the host repeat himself 8 times because of his accent.
