im pretty sure in the PR department most of the damage was done when they initiated the recall to begin with...there stock might drop for a bit but it'll go back up just as fast...i doubt people will care about this so if its not going to hurt them publicly or fiscally how will it hurt them....

This is America, everyone knows the best way to get rich is to
Sue Somebody. And there are so many people that sue over such ridiculous crap and win, that at least a couple people should sue for something that matters.

See, that's what you get for telling the truth. They should've kept their mouth shut about those gas pedals.

hey hey its not about the amount that got fined.
toyota lost a lot of money from this and it completely ruins their public image. What I don't get is why they thought they could get away with a sleazy underhanded move like this. Its like something a chinese company would do. you know, toyota's on the moral level of corporate hacking, industrial espionage, etc.

I dont think Toyota really cares about a 16m fine...they have already lost billions and will lose billions more because of their damaged reputation...very bad business by Toyota

They stand to loose a whole lot more because of their tarnished reputation. I'm sure a few managers at Toyota have been kicked to the curb for this. Which would be deserved.

Actually, Toyota's sales have risen 40% since last March. This recall thing is doing the opposite of hurting them. People know that since Toyota is trying to gain everyone's trust, they're selling cars for a lot cheaper price.
I personally bought a Toyota 2010 Corolla Sports Model for 14k with 0% interest for 4 years, now that's a steal. I paid a mechanic to get the brakes and accelerator checked, just to be safe, and everything turned out OK. In the end, I saved about $4-5k (from the low base price and 0% interest), all thanks to the recall.

nah, it seems harsh that I say so, but you'd be surprised at what kind of things chinese companies do. I certainly was. Everyone has their share of dirty laundry, but chinese companies have a serious lack of morals relative to other corporations. Do you know that the chinese government
supports copyright infringement? I read a new york times article about how the government encourages its companies to rip off of western corporations. They were talking about a cheap iphone knockoff in the article. Their public institutions also support that kind of stuff too. You think google has idiots for software engineers or do you think they are lying when they say they traced the hackings to public universities in china and state-controlled military institutions? I mean you can just read the words that I'm writing, but when you think about it for a second, its really mind boggling why china lags behind on their ethics report card. Don't give me that knee-jerk response that I'm stereotyping. There are chinese companies that do their best to follow the law and are anti-communist. They are definitely not the majority though.
What shocks me is that a japanese company would do something so underhanded. Japanese people pride themselves on being clean and ethical, they are very proud of it and they look down on their chinese counterparts as a bunch of scumbags. I've lived in japan before you know, I definitely seen that kind of stuff. You know how much of a shock it was when Japanese people heard about it? Now this recall business makes a japanese company no better than a chinese company. This is on the same level as the pope himself being accused of child abuse or the same kind of shock americans would get if george bush suddenly said to everyone that 9/11 was an insider job.

the sales have risen because they are sellig w/ 0% apr etc, they certainly lose a lot of money there, as opposed to if they didnt make the huge fck up.

Recall makes stupid people think they care. The 0% interest is to make sure they got the new cars on the road to gain back trust. They're trying to stay solid from all this.. at least how I see it. Not like it won me over.. I don't like Toyota.
