im a senior in high school and we were discussing americas involvement over the world . and few questions came up

do u guys think america is sticking its neck in to many issues over the world even thought they them selves are in pretty bad shape.

sort of not related to topic but, seeing as america donated a good sum of money to hati do u guys think other countries should involve them selves or should america be like them too and sort of ignore it.

Actually the US donates a smaller % of it's GDP to aid/charity than other countries do. That's the technical side. It means little, though, because the amount of money the US gives dwarfs all the other countries combined.

IMO: It's good that the US reaches out into others business, but we are currently not doing it incorrectly. I can't recommend a fix, but whenever our military gets involved it is seen as an act of aggression and rightly so. If you talked to any general or commander, they would all say that our forces are trained for combat and not peacekeeping.

No. America asserts its dominance as a super power. All super powers want to spread their influence.

In this whole idea of donating money, it looks good in the public eye. Of course, America also has its own intentions. For ex., after WWII, America stationed troops in Japan to neutralize them. We have kept 50k troops there ever since, with the sole purpose of spreading influence over Asia and combating any military threat. So to help Haiti in its time of need, we're morally obligated, but also gaining their loyalty and trade benefits, etc. The exact reasons I don't know, only the government knows that.

Geopolitics. Silo is right, America owns the world.

The only thing that -really- bothers me about the US is the evangelicals and how they are taken seriously.

While I think it is good that America helps others in a time of need, I also think that America has no right to do so considering how bad the economy is right now. All it is doing is punishing the taxpayers (like me) and making it even harder to dig ourselves out of the trenches. I also think it is wrong because they are handing out money that we don't have (i.e. our national debt is right around 12.5 trillion).

Anyways, I think with a country as wealthy and big as America should be morally obligated to help other countries. When America sends aid to haiti there isn't some kind of ulterior motive, they are just trying to help in good faith. I don't know why some people think that america is trying to control the world or impose their beliefs onto others. Just because America did that in iraq doesn't mean its true for all other foreign policy decisions..
