Is it just me, or has rap gone pop...

Post by Goseki »

What ever happened to creativity. It seems like hip-hop and techno is merging, but what really irks me is how creative beats and lyrics are now just being replaced by 1-hit wonders (techno trend) that pretty much uses someone else's song as their main backtrack and just sing along or edit a few lines here and there.

Note: I'm not talking about hardcore stuff, just pop in general, it makes sense since attaching yourself to an already well known beat makes it easier, but the number of people doing it... ughh.

dood rap started sucking when lil jon hit the scene. no rap should consist of repating the same line 5 times in a row, before repeating another line 5 times in a row. with the most monotonous wannabe industrial sounding beat in the background. since then it has been a slow progression into crap. now everyone wants to reverbe their voice and sound just like the previous person to reverb their voice.

**** rap. thats why i dont listen to pop rap much. i prefer underground shit.

rap =\= techno,
but rap is incorporating a LOT from techno.

Underground rap will most likely remain the way it is, but popular rap artists and new r&b artists too are using so much electronic stuff in their music, it's rare to hear someone actually hit a high note on the radio anymore. Also, the lyrics and creativity of the music has gone to shit too.

okay i can agree with that, definatly. But it think its only because all the good rap sounds/beats are already out there and its hard to come up with a #1 new original rap song, so artists are incorporating new sounds and techno is pretty popular so maybe thats the way there going with it. but hey i like techno and rap so its a win win for me

I just can't stand all the auto-tuning, or when they just mix tracks and sing along... like amazing... karaoke remix... woo.

Been thinking like this for a long time, sad indeed but it is really rare for me to listen to that mainstream shit, underground all the way..

idk for me it seems like evolution of the genre. there's a lot
of things that seem to become more pop but that might be because
some artists make music that's more accessible for people, as you
say more pop. but yeah you can see it in a bad way if you've been
into a certain style for a long time but i see it as positive,
because i really like a lot of songs i hear on the tv and the
radio nowadays, where in the past i'd put on a cd or listen to
internet radio.

kinda dissapoints me btw that everyone always speaks of pop music
like its something bad. pop music is not a bad thing. idk i guess
it's more hard core to not like pop because that means you're
different? O.o not trying to step on any toes just trying to figure
out whats so bad about pop especially since i think the quality
of pop music has increased over the years.

@cin

It's not so much an evolution as an devolution. We're going from original tracks to just remixes. It's not that I'm stuck in a certain style, it's just that I feel like artists that work hard and create fresh new songs should be on the radio.

Techno isn't bad, it's just that so many "artists" are doing autotuned stuff. A few things here and there to spice up the song, like GaGa is fine for me, it's when they use autotuning for their entire song so they can hit all their notes. Many "artists" today have the looks, but not the voice. Music to me has always been about the music, the voice, the band. Not the "Look at me, i'm a ditsy whore or a player that can't sing past half an octave, but can autotune my voice until it breaks glass."

Note: I'm not saying ALL pop artists or ALL rap etc. are like this. Just many on the radio are though...

Meh, pop is not a nono to me, I have my standards however. As long as it adds a new idea to music as a whole, I will listen to it no matter the genre. However, having pretty much any chick in 'different' fashioned clothes singing some meaningless catchy song makes me sick.

I wouldn't classify all of them as bad but yes, most music genres, including rap, really don't have a lot to offer these days. It's mostly remixes or some kind of...annoying....noise? I'm pretty much open to most types of music but a lot of the crap produced these days lack creativity and everything else that's good about music. I feel your pain man. :soosad:

Who the fck cares.

Hate people who downgrade mainstream for the sake of it.

Mainstream is mainstream for a reason.. it is the most popular, most artists want their music to be mainstream as it makes the most money.

If you like how the song sounds then who cares. Otherwise.. listen to something else, there is a lot of music in the world.

It's because it's the "In thing" now and everyone seems to be jumping on the band wagon but soon people will get bored and something else will replace it.

Just stay away from the radio and MTV.

There are very few artists who still do "real" hip hop there.

Lil John dosn't rap,he Crunks. Crunk is basically Club Beats + Repeat the same line.

I actually kinda enjoy todays's Hip Hop. Awesome DJs teaming up with rappers.

whoa guys first of all, when did rap ever become music? oh...wait... XD

also, I enjoy mainstream music BUT the makes common with others, I pick music I like if mainstream OR not, but I pick smaller bands and artists for a reason.

I've also noticed that techno and rap are merging, and techno i though would never become popular but i listened to it a lot and now Owl City... *tear* of course fireflies is appealing to the ears

Thread is too long did not read.

However rap died in the 2000s. It was good in the 90s, but after that it just flopped.
