I hate the snow.

Okay, so I live down in Tennessee and we like never get snow here. And when we do, or if theres even a slight chance of snow fall just about everything shuts down. Southerners are so deadly afraid of driving on snow. Fortunately for me, both my parents are from up north so we're all used to it. Or so I thought...

I woke up today and got a phone call from a windowed 45ish year old women who, along with her son, runs a little farm of sorts. Anyways, she needed my help to unload about a thousand pounds worth of feed from her truck. So I said, "sure, I'll help ya". I jump into my car, drive about three minutes down our little back country road, only going about 20-30 cause of the snow, and as I approach the top of a hill that has a slight turn in it, I started hydroplaning, I'm like, "No biggie, I'll just tap my brakes a few times like your supposed to..." Three, unsuccessful, taps on the brake later and I've run into this embankment. Fun stuff really.

Oh and it's my parents 30th anniversary today, Happy anniversary present guys.

fml.

Huh? What's the temp? You hydroplane on water...not snow :)

Could be ice underneath it, that's got all the Minnesotans in a lather too. Everyone forgets how to drive.

Sorry to hear about the car, hope there's not too much damage.

Two winters ago, we had about 4 meters of snow where i live (quebec).
Of course, colleges and university NEVER closes down because of snow
and on one particular day we had something like 40-50 cm of snow overnight
and i had a final at 8 in the morning. I managed to get there on time, even if my bus took a wrong route because the visibilty was completly none.
Anyway, when i got to call we were 4 lol, we still took the exam.
It was an amaznig season for skying and snowboarding :).
So yeah, snow is no biggie. BUT you have to have good winter tires here.

cpinney wrote:no shit cause you have no snow tires lol.

+1, here you are obliged by the law to have winter tires during winter.

We had a huge ice/snow storm 2-3 days ago. The snow melted yesterday and then refroze last night.

cpinney wrote:no shit cause you have no snow tires lol.

Haha. No one has those down here, we practically never get snow.

Good news is that I got lucky, there was hardly any damage. The blinker came loose, but duct tape fixed that. The casing surrounding the front tire on the drivers side was busted up so we took that off.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that nothing else goes wrong. Heh.

Oh and this car was pretty old to start with, 96' Honda Accord I believe. Has about 280,000 miles on it. The tint's peeling off, but I still love it. = )

Extenuating circumstances.

Edit: Oh btw I have a '94 Accord (not nearly as many miles) but they're awesome aren't they?

You don't hit the breaks while skidding out on a turn. Take your foot off the gas and recover from the skid.

I had started hydroplaning before the turn.

That's happen to me in the rain, I almost hit another car here in CT. I was going like 20 MPH, but the skidding made my car go a little faster, or so it seemed.

Dam, no long ago it Didn't snow here, but it rained like crazy, then the temp got down to 4-5 Degrees Fahrenheit. Freaking Cold. Anyways, it froze and we had over 6 inches of ice on all the roads alone.
Almost like this.
Spoiler!

It was crazy

well if it refroze i think you mean black ice, and that you couldnt get traction rather then hydro.

Not supposed to tap/pump the brakes on snow.

Just correct and if you have to, apply smooth and constant brake pressure.

My car has summer tires and I've slid around quite a bit this winter.

Snow isnt that bad here normaly, only reason we are getting it now is cause of el nino. Im in NC, not sure why you say southerners cant drive in snow...the only ones that cant are the ones from Florida here. Everyone else does good, thought some are a little cocky. Everyone here has snow tires too, mostly, cept the morons, or all weather which help. What this week we got 10 inches, back in dec the big storm about 2-3ft. Not that bad, some of the people panic but not sure why its so different in TN when im only like 45-1hour away from it.
