How are you paying for College?
How are you paying for College?
For the last few days I've been looking around the web and searching for colleges and what they provide + the $$ required per year.
Some of these colleges can run a person up to 45k for a year, and don't even get me started on the ivy league schools.
How are you paying for college? ( Besides those who have rich parents who will pay every single cent + send like $1000 a week).
God, I'm hoping I get some sort of scholarship now X_X
Has anyone here gotten a scholarship?
Edit: Afaik, a summer program at Hardvard for High school students is 10,000$
Even if you do do it, you only get 4 credits. fu** that

Re: How are you paying for College?
i pay nothing, i get an employee waiver for tuition because my step mother works at the uni i am at, and before my grandfather passed away he put $12,000 in some sort of bonds for my education, and it has grown very well to around $24,000 which is paying for room and board. I lied about nothing tho actually, i pay for books and stuff like that.

Re: How are you paying for College?
FAFSA + This sweet thing in Texas were they'll pay $2,000 a year or something like that for graduating in the top 10% of your class + Me + Parents = Paid.
Re: How are you paying for College?
FAFSA, summer jobs, money my grandparents put away when I was born. Plus this coming semester I should be getting scholarships for my major GPA.

it depends on household income and a bunch of other stuff, pretty much the worse off you are the more money you get.

google is your friend.
if your parents total income is more than 100k or so, don't rely on need-based aid cause your probably not going to get it. Doing good in school is probably the best way since it opens up chances for merit aid.

Re: How are you paying for College?
I got an 8000$ (2k/year) scholarship for university just for having an average between 85-90. I'm getting 1000 just for working at McDees, and another 4000$ from my mom's work though I have to write a short essay/summary thing for it..other scholarships I haven't applied for yet.
Rest is covered by parents or loans I'll have to make.

Re: How are you paying for College?
Scholarships are not hard to get, if you bother, you will get it. So don't be lazy and apply to as many as you can and you'll get in loads of them. My friends and I all got scholarships, it's laughably easy to get and to maintain. School specific ones are also nice (art/sci, engineering etc.). Just spend a weekend doing nothing but research for 1. Federal Scholarships (really shitty) 2. State Scholarships (also really shitty) 3. Overall scholarships (easy to get the mid-range ones) 4. School specific ones (usually pretty nice, but these are the ones that are rare) 5. Professional scholarships (if you know what you're going to do) 6. Ethnic scholarships (if your asian you're farked; if you're Hispanic you won't have to pay a dime)
Btw, in case you didn't know, I go to WASHU and got in Ivy leagues when I applied so I'm not just bullshitting from some community college about ez money; if you get in a school, they want you there and they're willing to pay.
Oh, and summer programs are never worth it unless you farked up your schedule or changed your major, then it's necessary to pay or else you're completely farked and may not graduate with your class. Not worth it to get rid of pre-reqs ever; might as well take it at a state school/comm. college and transfer the credits for 1/4 of the price.

Re: How are you paying for College?
also dual enrolling at a community college when your a senior in high school helps you save a lot of money. Take AP chem or AP calc your junior year? Then enroll in organic chem, calc 2, or calc 3 and those will save you money and help you clear away boring pre-reqs when you get to college.
AP tests are very very helpful too.

+1, I didn't have to take English or biology because of AP in high school. A 4 on the AP biology test earned me 8 hrs of biology in college.
*The 6 hrs of freshman English, still had to take technical writing and literature -.-.

Re: How are you paying for College?
I got a 5 on AP calc BC and now I take calc 3 at a CC
when you guys get a 4 or 5 on an AP test consider yourself getting $2000 to $3000 in scholarship money cause thats how much money you would have paid for classes like first year calc or english 101
also, focus on local scholarships or regional ones. the popular scholarships, national scholarships, and other big ones are extremely competitive and you probably wont get any unless your insanely smart.

I paid for books only, education is free here, even the highest academic degrees. Well, not really free as the money comes from the taxes we pay.

I took the AP Calc class in HS, but didn't feel like I understood it well enough at the time to take the test, because I didn't. I'm glad I got to refresh myself in college. 5 on the AP calc is impressive.
It's funny this thread showed up..today is the deadline for scholarship applications to my uni. I'm in the process of filling it out. Fingers crossed.

Re: How are you paying for College?
Well this year, my freshman year, it was through loans both my parents and I took out, we couldn't get any money from fafsa because my dad had a pretty good job when I applied and was accepted, but he lost it like the week after and is trying to run his own web development business and my mom is just a teacher, so next year I'm assuming I'll get more from FAFSA. I'm also going to be trying to get a bunch more scholarships.
Basically loans

Well I'm currently taking AP histoy and JAVA.
Next year I get Ap english and Organic Chem which has an AP test as well.
My school also provides AP bio, which I'mma take since that was my favorite class freshman year.
There is also and AP environmental science course which I think I'mma take since I've heard that class is fun.

I got half tuition scholarship each year, which is 50% even if tuition goes up next year and I work a summer job for the rest + my 18-yr "life savings"

Re: How are you paying for College?
I pay for books but that's it. I have the HOPE grant here in Georgia so they take care of all the money.
