Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
Hey guys I was wondering today what do you guys think on the different education systems?
I personally will never home school my children. I want them to socialize and learn how life really is from an early age.
I was never home schooled so I will never know how it is.

I went to Catholic schools in the Philippines but spent my last 3 years of HS in a small public school in New York. You can't shove all private schools or all public schools into a single box but if you ask me which one I prefer in general, then I would have to pick public school system.

Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
In grade 9, I went to a very strict uniform catholic High School. Now in grade 10, I switched to a Public High School and I love it. Pro's and Con's of each below :
Catholic High School
Pros:
-Uniform - easy to dress
-More friendly students
-Very well educated teachers
-Kids obeyed teachers
Cons:
-Strict uniform policy - No non-uniform apparel at ALL
-Unusual punishments such as cleaning up cafeteria
-Very cruel to the Handicapped IMO - I noticed the mentally disabled had to do a lot of demoralizing work i.e. clean up the garbage in school hallways by attaching brooms to the front of their wheelchairs.
-NO CELL PHONES!
Public High School
Pros:
-More Freedom - texting in class, where what you want, swearing is acceptable
-More to do - My school is located in downtown, so I can go around downtown at lunch or spare periods
-More interesting courses (electives)
Cons:
- Less Friendly environment - Kids that are more aggressive i.e. gangs and weapon issues
- Education seems to be a bit worse - kids aren't on task as much as they should be
- Disrespectful and rude kids.
Just my experiences so far

I think that if you want the best education, with little distraction then a Private School should be the school of choice.
If you don't really care about education, and would rather have fun send them to a public school.

Well, staying at home has about the same education standards as a Public school anyway.

Depends on where you live. Where I live our best public school is better than our best private school.
Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
Indeed. Depends heavily on the programs your high school offers. Mine had the IB program which gave me over 60 hours in college so I started college as a Junior o_O. The IB program was well established so we had little issues with the normal kids making fun of us. They actually respected us even though the school was dead center in the ghetto. Guess they realized we were the sole reason this F school was a C school and was rank 8 in the nation.
It really depends on your school and who's teaching, what programs or classes are offered. At my school, we had some of the international heads of testing teaching so we knew our shit. We had the examination head for history, chemistry course advisor for chem, a wise and very batty old lady for literature (no one left her class not fully understanding the inner workings of a book and not knowing how wise the crazy lady truly was), and a math teacher that won best math teacher in the US with 90% of his class passing the BC calc and ap physics exams with a 4-5. Honestly, the public school I went to could not have been anymore challenging than some of the top private schools. Only difference was we had a much less strict environment, but at the same time it was still strict.

I hear private schools have the best drugs.
Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
Private schools, hands down, are the best. It's not even a fair comparison unless the public school's either a magnet school or one of those schools in super wealthy areas, money = good education (or at least college acceptance rates :/)

Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
For me, and where I lived, I definitely got the best education by going to the private, unfortunately catholic, schools that I went to. The good thing was that I think my high school had a good balance of strictness, but still having fun. Yes, we had a uniform and a uniform code, but you didn't get a detention for having green stripes on your shoes. And I personally don't think you should be on your phone texting when you are in school. You are in school to learn, not text ffs
But private schools aren't for everyone. Especially the people who think they don't need to respect anyone and everything should just be given to them, unfortunately, those people usually come from rich families, and it's the rich families that send their kids to private schools.

The public high school I went to would send you to ISS (in-school suspension) for using cellphone and for disrespecting those who worked there (if it was real bad). If it was anything mild you had to stay after school. So don't assume that all public schools don't give a shit about what you do.

Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
I only think private school is worth it if your high school doesn't offer AP courses or just sucks.
In Europe, or at least the Netherlands, private school is very rare and there's no real benefit.
As a matter of fact, one of our private schools, Luzac, serves as school primarily for people who failed public high school. In Luzac you can do two years in one and they make sure of it you have high grades before you go into central exams. That's important because both grades count for half of your total. So it's actually like buying your diploma through a private school.
So the private schools in the Netherlands actually have a negative ring to them.
I love it that our public school is so good.
I would never want my children or myself to be homeschooled. I think that's also more in America, I've never heard of it in the Netherlands.

Honestly it just depends on whether the school officials want to spend the time. I guess our's did, we got Intel to give us a bunch of money for technology stuff. Almost every room had a SMART board and a projector. Every teacher got a brand new desktop when that happened too. Some students even got Tablet PC's (lucky bastards). Then again we also had a day with over 15 fights and TONS of cops walking around campus.

I like it when the school spends money. My school bought all its students and teachers a Lenovo Notebook, and the despite the old facade my school was extremely modern inside. It had the electronic whiteboards with the projectors and Bose sound hooked up to each room. It also had some "state of the art" class attendance program which costs thousands of dollars a month which sends your parents a text message every class you don't sign in for. Private Schools have their advantages and disadvantages, like any education system.
15 fights?
My school constantly was being searched for drugs by the police + sniffer dogs etc. A lot of the guys at my school were really into drugs and like everyone at the school, they had the money to fund it. But the fights were really bitchy.

Dang ur school is pretty nice. Texts for missing class might run up some parents' bills at my school though, lol.
As far as the fights, someone usually ends up getting their ass kicked. One guy got picked up and then got his face slammed into the ground. Another fight the vice-principal (ex-NFL player) threw someone down to stop the fight. Seemed like everyone knew about our drug searches ahead of time also.

It also depends on the level. Public and private universities share the same differences and similarities that public and private high schools have. Although most of the top universities in the U.S. are private, there's still UC Berkeley repping it up.

Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
food for thought. While more people graduated and went to college at the private school in my area more they were more likely than the few number of college bound kids from the public school to drop/fail out of college...
Private school got them all there but most of them didn't last long...
Public school didn't get as many there but the ones that went were successful...

I'm on a public school but they don't let everyone in, it's actually one of the best schools in the country afaik. The ambient is cool, no "badasses" or stupid kids, I do love it. Altough sometimes it's way too quiet, nothing going on.

Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
I think public schools can only reject enrollments if they have exceed the pupil to educator ratio. Perhaps they can reject too if a student had been previously expelled from another school for some such reason, and them being allowed into the school could taint its reputation or the learning ability of others.

Re: Home Schooled Vs. Public Education System Vs Private Schools
I had a teacher that was teaching at a private school for a few years and he told the class he was getting paid much less compared to being paid in the public school. They just shoved him into a class they needed to be taught.. He left and went to a public school for 2 reasons money and to teach football. Worked out perfect for him lol getting two things that he wanted most.
I'm sure not all private schools do that, but since all the money they get is from the students that is split between all the workers and paid that way. Less students next year means less money. Whereas a public school you're ganna get the same pay. Would be kinda hard to get people try at private schools. I know I'd go with the public just because of the pay.
Goes to show not all private schools are the best.
