Hey Guys,

I need some of your help, today my friend got a new computer for early Christmas present, because his old one was breaking down. Anyway, the only thing that we had to supply, was the Hard drive.

However, when we started it up. The computer booted up, got past the Windows loading screen (XP Home Edition) and then before it gets to where you choose what User Profile, it crashes and restarts. It does flash a blue screen with some numbers and letters, (not the BSOD, its different).

Anyway, we started it up in Safemode, and it managed to get into the OS, and started up to desktop no problems, but then everytime i try to start it up normally, same thing as above.

I do get a promp to install new hardware, but it says "Unknown" doesnt tell me what Hardware i need to install, so i cant download the drivers.

Anyone want to give me a hand, or like is there something we have to do? Do we have to use the Hard drive from the original owner (This gift was from my roomate who gave him his old comp but kept the original hard drive)

Anyway, if you need more info or anything let me know.

make sure everything is running at stock ( recommended settings, check your safe mode settings and compare to normal boot up ). Also try updating drivers/fresh copy of windows, if that doesnt work google your hardware setup and find common problems/solutions.

hope that helps, hard to pinpoint as there are many things that could be causing your blue screen. Don't forget to check if your new HDD and whatnot is compatible/properly installed.

It's possible that your buddy's HD has drivers and crap on it that are conflicting with the new machine's hardware.

Either format or reinstall all the drivers in safe mode.

simple problem as your running from an old hard drive its using the old system settings for the old hardware asking it to do the same thing on different hardware will cause it to crash a lot, best bet is either reset the settings or back up and reinstall xp, the clean install is best as it will remedy all problems caused by your old install

Yep. If you move a HD from one setup to another with different hardware specs, it's generally safe to bet you need to format the drive and do a fresh install of the OS.

Yep, format is quickest/cleanest, but if you really feel like working, you can boot into safe mode w/ network and pull all the motherboard/cpu drivers, all the stuff under "System devices", mice, monitors, keyboards, sound, display, etc. Sometimes you get lucky but tbh it's faster just to format/reinstall.
