Do you know what ICANN stands for or what ICANN does? Without googling it, could you honestly answer the poll please.

I kinda need to ask 100 about this and get their answers (yes or no) in order to do a report.

If you answered NO, why do you think you don't know about this entity even though is important? (besides the answer of I don't care, lol).

thanks a bunch guys!

I only found out what it is a few months ago when I was googling an IP address and I ended up looking up ICANN. =p

wow, I'm quite surprised at the poll results. I have asked other communities such as business communities and science communities. As expected, only a very small percent of the people asked knew about ICANN.

I kinda expected people from SRF know about ICANN though. We are a gaming community and of all communities I have asked, we are the one that use the computer the most, so I would have thought that somehow you guys were exposed to ICANN at some point before.

Basically, they job is related to ip adresses and world-wide-web domains. Their job is pretty important IMO. Why do you think so few people know about it (besides the fact that most people don't really care)?

PS: Maybe they should rename the company ICAN'T :P

Same reason why you probably don't know who invented most of the things you use in your daily activities? Same reason you probably have very little knowledge about certain things that some people are "experts" on?

You're sounding a bit pretentious don't you think?

Using computers often != being knowledgeable on computer technologies

There are professionals in many, many fields who have used computers for years and won't have the slightest clue how to even begin fixing one or explain how it functions. Most computer laypeople usually follow an unchanging routine to computing and this forum is certainly no exception to that. I knew about ICANN, but only because I'm constantly reading about technology news and I have prior knowledge of these obscure corporations and protocols.

Going from memory without using google, ICANN's registration ends soon and ownership of ICANN is going to the United Nations, what does that mean for the internet as we know it today?

lol i honestly cant remember,

i have freinds who work for multinational corporations and they recently have been discussing ICANN frequently talking about what changes the UN could impose, but im a 3rd party to these conversations so thats how i know about ICANN, through hearing freinds talking about it

And the person that invented how to keep milk good longer is Pastury or something, who invented that if you boil it first, it stays good and keepable for a longer amount of time...

Louis Pasteur. Thank you 8AM microbiology class. :)

Everytime I hear his name, I think of that weird bottle he used - the one with the long neck.
