So I am interested in going to the hardware field of computers. I would want to make a living as a computer tech, and I was wondering if people know what are the Major(s) that I need in order to work in this field(fixing computers).


I sort of found stuff related to it on http://www.collegeboard.com/

but it is just making me confused, for it doesn't really say what we would do in those majors, and rather just tells me what the focus is within that major.

Computer Engineering?

Your first year will probably be pretty basic stuff like Informatics or Computer Science. You'll take a lot of math. Calculus, trig, etc... I'm not sure what the exact major is but you'll be taking a lot of courses in programming as well as subjects more relevant to your interests.

If you're just aiming for fixing computers, I don't think you'll need a major for that, or go to a four-year college/university. You'll probably just need certification.

Like Izaach said.. I don't think you'd need a 4 year degree to be a computer tech..

If you're looking to advance and/or do more advanced computer hardware related jobs then a computer engineering or electrical engineering degree would be good. If you want to be more on the software,programming, data and network management side..do computer science.

By computer tech..do you you just want to work for geek squad at best buy? Or Intel designing circuitry?

A geek squad no, and I don't know whats Intel Designing circuitry.

I was wondering if you could kind of tell me the differences between the Computer Engineer and Information Technology Majors.

In order of increasing difficulty :
- management information services (should be listed under business college)
- anything in the technology field, ie. electrical engineering technology, computer science technology, etc.
- computer science
- electrical engineering(focuses more on the circuit side of things)/computer engineering(focuses more on the programming side of things)
