Bulgaria's Abandoned Children

Every now and then we see documentary's on TV that make us go...wow. For me, this is one of them.

In 2007 the BBC documentary film "Bulgaria's Abandoned Children" caused an international outcry because the images of neglect were so shocking to witness in a country that had just become a member of the European Union. Bulgaria has more institutionalized mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe.

The documentary is set in a small Bulgarian village in an institute called Mogilino, a place where 75 unwanted disabled children are growing up. Many of them cannot walk or talk, not necessarily because they are unable to, but because they have been neglected and have never had the opportunity to learn.

Warning: Spoiler contains upsetting images

Spoiler!

What makes it so shocking for me is that they are put in a home with people paid to look after them, but the carers just don't give a shit. Vaska (the girl in the spoiler) had a broken leg and she was screaming in agony as the carers were dressing her, but they just ignored it. I don't understand why they can't just spend a little more on food and it would improve their health drastically. It makes you think what kind of people there are in this world. One of the carers was beating two of the mute kids when they didn't do a task properly. After the Director (the manager of the home) was confronted with video evidence of this, the carer was dismissed. No court case, no prison sentence, just dismissed.

On a lighter note, after the documentary was broadcast, the BBC was inundated with donations to help these kids. MP's from around the world, and the Bulgarian government got involved, and since then, the majority of the kids have been moved to smaller, well looked after homes. Just 15 days ago, Mogilino was shut down.

Bulgarian Government doesn't give a shit!
literally half of Bulgaria's population is a Mafia.
90% of the people in the government (if not all) are corrupt. before, when the country was still semi-socialist the people leading the nation started the whole organized crime. a huge inflation was started where the money that you would have saved to buy yourself a house had literally turned into the equivalent of 3 kilograms of cheese. Almost everyone became poor and ever since the country has been in enormous debts. though by now things are starting to turn a little better (at least economically) it's still a live gutter. Fair people have become rare, no one keeps to laws. in Sofia right now there are exactly 3 speed cams for >1kk people. money can't really be spared for anything...sadly

the chances of that donation money to actually be used to help these kids is 0.0001%

When God creates a baby, it is pure. It is our duty to care for people. I'm so sad for these people. These pics really are painful to see.

but that pretty much only last for the tourist season, after that it's like a ghost town O__o
Bulgarian people seem to be unable to think of any way to make a business that lasts, all investments are short-term grab-your-cash investments.

Personally I'd say that they should invest a lot of money in the production of food. Bulgaria definitely has some of the best foods in Europe, and of the highest quality as well. + we has the epic Yoghurt bacterias...
I tihnk if the government plays it well, we could own most of the food market in europe by 2020...

EDIT: guess I'll stop bitching about it before I say something incredibly stupid :P

Bulgaria sounds like a pretty fucked up country (no offense). As corrupt as Iraq, or any country in Africa.

Do you mean, when the mum and dad creates a child, it is their duty to protect, feed and keep the child warm.

If one is man enough to get a woman pregnant then one should be man enough to take care of the end result.

whats up with that one demon kid?

Is that cataracts or something?

He looks like that kid from the Unborn.

Its sad though, all these "help African babies" or things like that, when even here in the US there is starving kids that look just as bad as these Bulgarian kids do.

yes and no, it's corrupt, no doubt about that. but they manage to keep things quiet overall. overall living there is not that bad...but the government really is wrong =/
it seems pretty lawless though... virtually no traffic rules, shitty cops, lots of crap about building.
curerntly they are building a new flat right behind ours. officially there should be at least 40 m of distance to other flats, but there hardly is 10m. and it got built right on top of the kids playground (which was moved to the side of the street)

View as it used to be:

view as it is now:

found it on google so it's not really accurate :P
you can see the fences around the construction site, but that was from like a year and half ago. digging hasn't even begun yet on the pic. (the lfat you see on the first pic should be to the left (though I think it's actually a pic taken form the second flat in the row (though the view is very similar))
