Buying a desktop CPU, need suggestions/help

Post by asdf »

I'm looking to spend maybe $900 tops, so I want to get the best I can get for that money (obviously) - All I'm looking to buy is the tower. I don't need a huge HDD, I don't forsee myself even using up 250GB in the next few years, so that can save me some money. Also Id like 4GB ram as a minimum.

So. I found this:
Brand iBUYPOWER
Model Gamer Extreme 539
Processor AMD Phenom II X4 955(3.2GHz)
Processor Main Features 64 bit Quad-Core Processor
Cache Per Processor 4 x 512KB L2 Cache
Memory 8GB DDR2
Hard Drive 500GB SATAII
Optical Drive 1 22X DL DVD+/-RW Drive
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB
Audio Sound card - Integrated
Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Software Included Free MS Windows 7 Upgrade

Motherboard
Chipset AMD 780V
CPU
CPU Type Phenom II X4
Installed Qty 1
CPU Speed 955(3.2GHz)
L2 Cache Per CPU 4 x 512KB
L3 Cache Per CPU 6MB
CPU Main Features 64 bit Quad-Core Processor

Graphics
GPU/VPU Type ATI Radeon HD 4870
Graphics Interface PCI Express 2.0 x16

Memory
Memory Capacity 8GB DDR2
Form Factor DIMM 240-pin
Memory Spec 2GB x 4
Memory Slots (Available/Total) 0/4
Maximum Memory Supported 8GB
HDD Capacity 500GB
Optical Drive Type DVD±RW
Optical Drive Spec 22X DL DVD+/-RW Drive

I see it has a discount of $70 already calculated into the price, but I'm still wondering if there's something out there that's comparable but cheaper.

Thanks for any help! :D :D :D

for your GPU if you can wait ATI is coming out with Direct X 11 cards ( 5xxx Series) so the 4xxx cards will be cheaper so you MIGHT be able to move to the 4890

Buying a desktop CPU

...
CPU

YOUR NOT BUYING A Farking MICRO PROCESSOR, YOUR BUYING A PC, A PERSONAL COMPUTER.

/End rant.

I work as a Technician in the back room but when I have to deal with customers who refer to their entire computer as a "CPU", I just want to come to work one day with an assault rifle and snipe the next 20 people who say this. It would like 2 hours, tops.

So Im guessing because of this, the particular PC I posted would probably drop in value? Im not so concerned with getting the best of the best, just as close to the best as I can get with spending ~900$.

really even necessary to get a dx11 card, wtf is gonna support dx11 in the next year, only a hand full of games now support dx10, might as well buy a card that is top of the dx10 realm then the only dx11 one.
