Windows 7 for cheap
Basically, if you're a student of any university in the U.S. and you're not in the MSDNAA, you may be illegible for a copy of Windows 7 for only $29.99 .
Go to this site: http://www.win741.com/
And click on the Buy graphic.
EDIT:
I think this applies to the U.K. as well. I'm not sure about other countries yet.
And just in case some of you are wary about this deal, it's an upgrade version, which is generally much cheaper than the full version, and here's the article for it:

Love that sentence, to the point. If you're a Computer Science major you get it free... like I did.

I thought this was nothing new? I got my vista ultimate for like 10 euro as well. I thought every university had these kind of arrangements.

Screenshot from the MSDNAA site link emailed to me by my university CSC department:

*I haven't downloaded it yet, they sent me the link, had to email them back my student info before I get ID/PW for the MSDN site.

Re: Windows 7 for cheap
Muhaha! Got my email back with my MSDNAA user info. I'm going to download all the software they have!
Got 64 and 32bit Windows 7 downloading atm. I have an older rig with a Pentium D that needs the 32-bit. 64-bit for mine so I can get off this RC release.

Re: Windows 7 for cheap
i found this thru another blog, but only got an option for home premium, is there a link for professional or it's based on the institution you attend?
edit: can i run the 64-bit edition with 3GB RAM (can't upgrade since it's a laptop, at least for cheap/ease of installation) or is 4GB the minimum required?

Re: Windows 7 for cheap
It will run on any amount of RAM (I think 1GB+ is recommended). All you need for 64-bit is a 64-bit cpu... you should be fine. Windows 7 should run nice on 3GB, it's not as much of a RAM hog as vista.
The discussion about 4GB and 64-bit comes from the fact that a 32-bit OS can't address more than 4GB of ram, actually somewhere around 3.25 (some usage goes towards the gpu and other devices), so you need a 64-bit OS to fully utilize 4GB and beyond.
