Most of the people who fly that are so dumb they think its the confederate flag...as for whether its racist or not, my dad wouldn't let us stop in south carolina cause they still fly it on public buildings...

Yes, I feel it's racist, but I also understand that it's a part of their history.
That said, history belongs in a fucking museum, not to be flown above a capital building, place of business, or house.
Or on a shirt, apparently.
I will lol if someone rages over my comment tho

i dont think its racist.. i wouldnt consider myself african american, because besides dark skin i dont have black features.. but yes i am black if u would judge only by skin tone. but anyway my family is egyptian, and yes i would consider myself a black person but saying im african american is gay because why do i have to be african american? why cant i just be american?
anyway its not racist but its ignorant because they are trying to represent the confederate states of america.. which has been long gone for centuries now lol so..
anyway people down south are generally uneducated, and people up north are far more superior.. sooooooooo (and no offense to anyone from down south but the truth hurts and u cant lie about statistics..)
"Vermont was rated as the smartest state. Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maine, Minnesota, Virginia, Wisconsin, Montana and New York rounded out the top ten."

Some people have an affinity towards the south and that flag represents that. It's funny how they say things like "If you think this is racist then you need a history lesson" because until very recently it was a symbol of racism. They need to just shut the f*ck up and say "I like southern culture and I don't know anything about its history but this flag represents my love for the south.

Its not rascist, but I do understand why some people might feel that way
Both the Union and Confederacy treated blacks like trash back then, and they are both guilty of racism.

yeah but if one side won black people went free...if the other side won black people would've been condemned back to slavery probably under even harsher circumstances...
i would say this would be a lesser of two evils thing but one evil is ppl saying mean things and the other is slavery...the good guys are clear here, so are the bad guys...and that flag represents the bad guys and everything they were fighting for...its a slap in the face to all the Union Soldiers who died and to the all the african americans who have ancestors who would have been enslaved under that flag...theres simply no other way to take it for black people...
im going to bed...this better not explode while im away so i have to wake up and do some Common Sense Damage Control...

I bet if you ask those people, they wouldn't even know why their flag looks like that. They wouldn't even know why the Confederates chose to make their flag look the way it looks during the split of the USA. Ignorance is bliss.

Omg you people are rediculous, do you really think every white person down south who flys a confederate flag is a racist who wants to see all blacks chained up? NO! Jesus, back then the Confederates fought for states rights, few southerners could even afford slaves only 1% had 3 or more, stop waiving your stereotypes around, maybe its ya'll who need to grow up.

lawl you texans and your pride...Gonna have to agree with Xem on this one. The confederate flag is a symbol of secession and slavery and violence. It caused more American casualties than all US foreign war casualties combined. Its different from state flags. Trying to secede from a country tp keep slavery legal and then failing to do so doesnt sound like such a glamorous piece of American or southern history. Being proud of a so called "heritage" shouldnt be something you should be saying...its rather shameful to think that way.
It really should be made illegal to fly it in the public. All it does is invoke feelings of resentment and hate in both parts of the country.
well the confederacy wanted to keep slave so meh
Northern states simply didnt enslave blacks - they werent treated any better.

Textbook argument. States' rights my ass. So, if every state in the United States set about to enslave all non-whites, I guess the federal government should just "respect it" and let states run wild. We should never question the ethics of anything states do since their rights are too important.

This, I agree with this. Also, I would ask the topic starter to keep this topic open, only because it IS a hot topic in the US, and there are cases currently running that are questioning whether the confederate flag (whether the same one they used in the Civil War or not) should be flown.

but did you also know the only way the united states could even get the southern states to join the union in the first place was to allow slavery? i understand what your saying but in history its been marked down as the flag for slavery (its happened to a lot of things the swastika is the same way it will forever be remembered as Nazi Germany). i know they fought for state rights but they also fought to keep slavery and the issue is well the African Americans were not treated fairly. sure they would of been released because of the technology now days that 1 man could do miles upon miles of land.

i would like to keep this open too but i don't want a flame war raging in OTL
also about it being flown or not well i don't think it should. because well it would divide the US and like the Russian primeminister has been saying the us would become 2+ separate countries fighting over this land. i mean how do you think we have survived over the 200 some years the US has been here? we are uncontested mexico was weak and we were a raging new people and the fact that we had 2 big oceans in the way we have not been invaded (besides WWII, war of 1812, and the revolutionary war). i think it would be best for all of us if the confederacy was forgotten about because it would solve a lot of issues that could tear the US into pieces.

It's hard to ignore stereotypes when they seem so true tho ^^
I live in washington state, but lived for a few years in lousiana, and I did find it to actually be very offensive... I met alot, ALOT of incredibly ignorant people, with very skewed ideas of the world.....
I'm not saying all southerner's are racists, but the ones I met sure as hell were.

I also think they shouldn't be flown, but I don't think it should be forgotten about. The south fought for what they believed in, the north did as well. The north won, and history tells the story of the winner. As I said in my first post, the Civil War, and all it's aspects, belong in museums, not on display out in the open.
Take this very contrived example. A lot of American's are egotistical (I'm an American, so don't take this the wrong way, lol). Imagine a shirt with a picture of the atomic bombs blowing up, and as a caption it read,

"Someone set us up the bomb!"
Now walk around Hiroshima and Nagasaki like that.
(Also going to bed. Hope to see this topic alive and nonflaming tomorrow morning)

Yes, I consider it racist.
The Ku Klux Klan has used it as their flag too. Dunno which generation of the KKK tho. Neo-nazi's in America are still using it.

Who says there flying the flag as a sign of racism dipshit? A lot people in the southern states would be flying the flag as remembrance of their great grandfathers who fought in the civil war. Of course some people are going to do it as a sign of racism but there's those who remember those who fought for what they believed in, no matter how bad.
Everyone has a right to their own opinion and beliefs expect when it's a white fella huh?

It's not racist.
Sure, it may bring up some akward feelings, yet the flag itself, is not racist.

Well I can't really judge this actually. I was gonna say I think it's wrong, but apparently the symbol is part of a couple of state flags. You can ban the image, but what's that gonna do?
Besides, I support freedom of expression and to be able to fully support it I have to say this should be fine too.
