www.arvixe.comIf you get hosting from them, they will pay for your domain until you cancel.
Their hosting is top notch.

I register domains with godaddy when they have their $1.18 sell every couple of weeks. Check slickdeals often to catch it. Haven't had any problems setting them as addon or parked domains in my bluehost account.
EDIT: What Toasty said.

Actually, 000webhost and xhosting is two quite good free hosting, they are a little slow to surf on(in my opinion) but they both offer PHP, MYSQL, ASP etc even with their free hosting plands and xhosting offer unlimited diskspace, so there is relative good free hosts out there.

pingpulse.net for webhosting and domain purchase
$5 for bronze hosting, and $11 for a .com,.org, or .net

If your taking your site seriously.. you should never ever use free hosting.. trust me.
If its a website which you arn't going to get any visitors on and dont really care what happens with it - then fine, go with free.

lol, well depends. I'll try for free for fun, getting somewhat serious. If there is enough people, i'll go paid hosting.
I am using Zymic atm, but it's kind of slow when FTP... so I am trying other alternatives.

Well yeah free hosting is fine to test things out.
And DO NOT listen to itsune and use godaddy for hosting.

Godaddy are a horrible company, only good thing about them is that they give good deals on bulk domain purchases.
