video card compatibility

Post by [SD]happynoobing »

What specs should I look out for when buying a new video card to make sure that it is compatible with my current motherboard? (other than the obvious PCI-E connector of course)

In particular im looking to upgrade my GeForce 8800GTS 320MB with to an ATI 4850 1GB.

btw which is better sapphire or asus (lol why does this name remind me of anus)?

Make sure your PSU can handle this video card, most now a days need 450w minimum. Also make sure it fits in your case as new cards are HUMONGO. Also some video cards require a 6-pin connector that plugs directly into the card though that might be the norm now, wasnt the case last time I went video card shopping.

I upgraded my 8800gts 320 to an HD4870 1gb last year, i upgraded the power supply, but I didn't really need to do that.
I had an 450 watt power supply which is more that enough for a single card in a modest system

I do believe that PCI-E 1 motherboards are compatible with PCI-E 2 cards, and vice versa.
