Choosing a laptop.

Post by The Mobius »

My budget is about to $900. I'm looking for something with a decent processor (no less than 3MB cache), any form of decent graphics card, and also of a good company (sony, lenovo, etc.)

I found 2 on newegg while searching real quick, one is an acer, and the other is lenovo. The acer is bad in terms of.... well its an acer
And the lenovo is lacking in terms of its video card (its a shared intel graphics one).

Here are the links:

The acer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834115540

The lenovo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834146540

Which would you prefer? There is a price difference of about $150, which for a cash strapped student is a lot There is virtually no difference in the processor. Like I said the only thing the acer has over the lenovo is the video card, but even then the fact that it is an acer handicaps it.

If you can find anything better that fits in my budget feel free to make suggestions!

Thank you!

Well, I don't know the currency rate (as I live in England) into dollars however, there are a lot of good deals out there on laptops for that amount of money.

The Acer out of those to is the better one. Acer is more renound then that lenovo I'm sure. Sure enough not to use the term "well its an acer." in a derogatory manner. :P
It was the 2.4GHz dualcore processors and the 9300m graphics that swayed me. Compared against the 2.1 dual core and integrated graphics of the lenovo. (Just akimmed through rough details)

However, I strongly suggest you do some research first, especially for the quality of memory and graphics as roughly all the processors for laptops in that budget are 2.1-2.4 I've gathered.

+VERY IMPORTANT, screen quality/size. I've saw some yucky screens that have been thrown on laptops to level out the price and make it seem that your getting a good deal.

State what its going to be primarily used for then I will, along with others here have an idea of what to look for in a laptop.

I was going to go for a laptop, although, i decided against it and went for a more powerful desktop. Not asking you to re-consider a laptop although, this desktop pwns and It was built using around the same budget. :)

GL:)

EDIT: The Acer screen is bigger as well!

hope you have like some sort of big ass back up drive in case your laptop fucks up.

My sister's laptop like never started anymore cuz of something blah blah retarded issue it had ( files corrupted due to retarded way of shutting down ), she had to use the default key that restarts the whole laptop to back when it was "just born" phase. So she lost everything.

I would go with a thinkpad. They're expensive (and some might say ugly too, lol), but maybe you can find a good deal.

Excellent points. Haha you see, the only reason I use Acer in a derogatory matter is because Lenovos are a more reliable company in terms of product quality. Today I went to a local electronics store and found those 2 laptop models but with slightly lower specs, and the lenovo honestly felt like it was worth $2000+, while the Acer felt almost cheap. I mean if they were both of the same company, and the only difference was the specs, then for sure the Acer would be my choice.

But yes, you brought up some really good points with the screen. Haha those two offers expire on July 15th I believe so I need to either make a decision fast, or wait out the next wave of deals. :p

I'll mainly be using it for college related things, and possibly installing a game or two if I get bored.

Listen. My dad got an acer, had to replace the battery after 2 years, mom had an acer, battery lasts now 10minutes after 3 years...
I have a thosiba Satellite (forget the excat brand)
It's 13'' Windows Vista Basic, 4GB ram, (3.5GB used) 2.0GHz dual core, Accelerator Graphics from Intel.

It cost about 1100$ but i added 2 GB rame so yea. this was in June 2008 about a year ago.My battery lasts 2H30mins still after 1 year.
I can run Silkroad and CounterStrikeSource.
Honestly, for your needs, scrap the video card, dont get acer, go for lenovo!
Seriously, an accelerator can be good sometimes, just got to find the good deals

I saw this $550 Toshiba laptop at Best Buy today. It had 4GB ram, 320GB hard drive, a good processor, and an ATI 3200 graphics card. You can't ask more from a $550 laptop. I don't know the name though lol. Search it up I guess.

no insult but buying brand makes you a tool, check what is under the hood and that wont betray you. also for that kind of money you could aim at a gts 260 ( or was it gtm ? ).

hope that helps ...

We are talking about laptops here not desktops -_-
Laptops, are harder to find, unless your building your own.
So what if I have a Toshiba? Its for school, and when im on a break, its for one of my characaters to stall.
My computer is built from scratch from a friend of mine, every piece is different, unique I should say, so yea, having a laptop with a brand doesn't make us tools.

Other thing.

Toshiba's aren't bad, just got to know how to remove the bootware, and its fine.
I run linux, Mac OSX, and Vista on my laptop... its absolutely fine 8)
