Anyways, it's one to watch, if you haven't seen it, one of the greatest movies ever. And it's a real story.

I'm more into drama war movies, not fully focussed on the fighting.
As mentioned before Schindler's List is a great one, but The Pianist and The Counterfeiters are also very good imo.
I just watched The Counterfeiters (german movie, real title: Die Fälscher) and it was great. It's about operation Bernhard in the concentration camp Sachsenhausen, the operation was to create false money for the Nazi's so they could flood the English/American market with it, collapsing their economy.

My all time favorite war related movie is La Vita e bella, for me a soundtrack is really important for a movie and La vita e bella has the best soundtrack.

If you're more into action I can recommend Letters from Iwo Jima. Then if you want a full image of the battle for Iwo Jima you can also watch Flags of our Fathers, which tells the American side of the battle. I think the movies are actually linked, so that it's meant that you see both. I liked Letters from Iwo Jima a lot more than Flags of our Fathers.
But if you really just want to see shit getting blown up, watch The Thin Red Line. (Although there are a lot of people who think it has a great story and blabla, to me it's just a lot of action)

edit: If you're not into movies with subtitles you should avoid Die Falcher, La Vita e Bella and Letters from Iwo Jima.

My 2 fav american war movies are:
Black Hawk Down
Saving Private Ryan

Then theres my asian war movies :
Red Cliff
Red Cliff 2 (but Red Cliff 1 was slightly better)

Assembly (2007) is probably one of the best imo because of the war scenes and emotional conflicts.
But it's an asian movie lol.

Yea and Red Cliff first one was better than the second.

Flags of Our Fathers, then watch Letters from Iwo Jima since they tie in together, but tbh flags of our fathers was more talking then action, iwo jima was the better of the two.

Damn now I feel like watching some war movies.

Nobody seems to have suggested Windtalkers yet either.

Not the greatest of the great but still good in its own right.
