Do you wanna learn the real way or the cutting corners way? If you want to cut corners: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ Otherwise, I'd invest in some lessons to learn how to read real sheet music, (unless you already can read it, I can read treble clef from playing saxophone, but bass clef just confuses me with dropping two steps...) and get real instruction on the instrument.

With the guitar tabs I taught myself some easy-medium songs...you could also hit up some how-to dvd's and what not.

seriously youtube is your best friend, but it really depends on your background, if you have any musical background it will be easier for you to pick it up just by learning through videos.

I would still recommend taking lessons to learn the basics including like how to hold the instrument properly and where to press on a fret.

Otherwise, the fastest way to learn after you get the basics is to jam with people

also: are you doing the double bass or like the electric bass?

Learn electric guitar, or you'll consistently be second best.
/no offence bassists

I'll be cutting corners. Thanks :)

I have an older brother and father who both play guitar so they help me with that stuff.

Yeah, I'll be jamming with some of my friends once I get the basics down.

Electric, I think.

I'll probably learn guitar after I learn some bass.

IMO you should start with a 6-string bass, then move onto 8.

Imo bass is one of the most under rated instruments in a band, but at higher levels, it gets ridiculously hard to master

here's something you can shoot for in the future

edit also another one
