I'm about to buy....

..A laptop. Well my dad is offering me one, the max price is 500£uro, so I've been looking around the local stores and I found this one:

Intel Pentium® Dual Core T4200 2,0GHz (FSB 800MHz)
1MB L2
4GB DDR3 (2x 2GB)
320GB SATA (5400rpm)
ravador DVD±RW Double Layer
TFT 15,6" HD (1366x768)
NVIDIA® GeForce® 9400M
1407MB (256MB dedicated + 1151MB shared)
16-bit stereo;
4x USB2.0
VGA
HDMI
Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/Draft-N
Rede 10/100/1000
Windows Vista® Home Basic Português 32-bit
Microsoft® Office Ready 2007 (versão experimental 60 dias)
McAfee® Internet Security Suite 2008
(Li-Ion)
370 x 383 x 25 mm
2,7kg
1.3Megapixels with Integrated Mic.

So, how good is this computer? I was just looking for a laptop able to run most of the games, lag-free, good resolution and a good performance.

But since I don't know chit about this matter, I was wondering if someone who knew about this could shed some light on my doubts?

And is the price worth it?

Why a gaming lap top? They're pretty unpractical imo.

I have another doubt, my current desktop has 1Gig RAM but the processor is an Intel Celeron with 3.06GHz (and it's really old), so my question is, since the laptop's processor is dual core and it says there it has 2Ghz, does it have 2Ghz on each core = 4Ghz total? I don't know nothing about this but it's weird that a recent computer has 2/3 of the processor potency than some desktop from like 3 years ago..

@Melez - Because my parents are divorced and I could really, REALLY use a gaming laptop, alot of people have said that a desktop would be much much cheaper and much more worth it but there's no way I'd get along with another desktop - long story here - , so I really want a laptop.

It's an Acer Aspire

A 2Ghz dual core has two cores on the die, each running at 2Ghz. You could say it's 4Ghz total, but it doesn't work like that. It's just simply two cores, 2Ghz each. It blows the pants off the celeron because it's a completely different design.

That's a pretty nice laptop.

Why does it come with 4GB of ram, but only a 32-bit OS? You need a 64-bit OS to make use of all 4 GBs.

EDIT: If you can, tell them you don;t want the McAfee crap..it's a waste of resources.

EDIT: The Acer website "pricing and upgrades" doesn't work for me. =[

I found it in the website of a local hardware store. :P

I guess I'll ask them that (McAfee/32-OS), doubt they will lower the price(McAfee), is there any way to change the OS?

Oh.. idk. I thought you customized it off a site. You may not be able to add/subtract anything from it. It's not a huge deal, but with a 32-bit OS only 3-3.5GB will be available.

And would that make any noticeable difference or..?

A Windows 32-bit OS will use 4GB of RAM but in combination with your video card. For Example, if you have a 512 Mb video card, the 32-bit OS will use 512 Mb from the video card and physical RAM up to 4Gb, or a little less than 3.5 Gb of physical RAM.

And that's a nice laptop for 500 Euros. You will definitely be able to game, just don't set all your graphics at high resolution.

Kind of a weak graphics card but you can't expect much on a laptop..

You're not going to pull off max settings on new games but it should play smoothly..idk really

Laptop + gaming = expensive

Do they deliver overseas?

Even if they do, that'd be some extra money. :(

But well, for your comments I think this is good enough for my needs. Less is bad, more is too much.

For 500EUR you could pretty much have 2 decent gaming desktops.

I think so.

You can go to the store and buy a good desktop for about $375 as a bundle. You could probably do it cheaper if you built it yourself.

The question is not the quantity or price, but I need a laptop because I have no room in my dad's new gf house and I keep moving between three houses.

Happy? -_-

He needs a decent pc for gaming, for $350? Nope, not going to happen.

What he has picked out is pretty good for 500EU / $700 / being a laptop.

My graphics card is more than that..

Decent gaming pc relies on decent graphics card which is automatically >100$ (>150!).

Then again it depends on your perspective of decent, but I do like playing games on at least medium settings.

I completely missed your post, yeah that's pretty sweet.. has a better gpu in it also. I'd go with his choice if you're able to buy from that site.

Mobile GPU Comparison Chart: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Gra ... 844.0.html

You definitely want the 9600 over the 9400.

Well you will regret it, unless you are away from home regulary and you take it with you.
I bought one, enjoyed it for weeks, untill I got a fried motherboard.

No laptops for me anymore.
