Cat Problem [WITH PICS!]

So I moved into this new house and the owner has a cat, I don't hate cats nor despise them, but this one is giving me hella a problem already.

So basically the house have a few major Stairways where one have to go pass to get to various rooms, and basically the cat have its pooing station on the top floor, and the feeding area in the kitchen (which is in the middle), also the bottom cozy area where it lays down for a nap. Now my room is on the top floor. So whenever I have to get somewhere the stupid cat would hiss at me showing all her fangs in a "ready to strike" stance, I try to ignore her and walk pass her the first time, but then she retreats to the next stair well and start hissing more heavily and starts growling as well. This morning I missed breakfast because it was blocking me from going into the kitchen Yes it sounds really ridiculous I know, but this cat looks freaken dangerous! Its one of those flat face onces, and I was notified it is known to bite as well .

So, I need your help guys, anybody who owns a cat can give me some advice on how to deal with this angry cat? I can't go on missing breakfast/lunch/dinner just because the cat won't let me move around the house

edit: ok Since you guys have been bugging me non-stop, I've finally took some pics. yes she looks retarded. But ya we are getting along fine now, she even use my leg as a scratching post. Anyways thx for all the help appreciate it

Know the owner? If so, tell him/her his/her cat is being a total biatch.

Just need to show it you are not scared of it, maybe get some string and play with it...

My great uncle use to be scared of cats, every time he would come over and stay at our house when I was younger, my cat honey would go and sit on his lap. My uncle would be frozen to the chair because of this little ginger and white cat. Use to find it so funny when I was a kid.

Water is a pretty good deterrent for most cats, especially house cats. Air also works nicely if you hit them in the face with it....or you could just make yourself look more imposing, growl a little, don't be afraid to be the alpha male...or female...

Buy some catnip spray, they sell it at pet stores, and spray the area right outside your door with it. That should calm her down a bit. She's hissing at you because she's being territorial, you're new and you're a stranger. You need to allow the cat to accept you. Any kind of action coming out of you that's aggressive will reaffirm with the cat that you're an intruder and she will continue to hate you.

Buy some cat treats or make the owner buy you some cat treats. When you walk outside your door make sure the cats sees you put a cat treat down and just walk away. Do not make eye contact while the cat eats, she'll think you're being aggressive towards her.

Get the owner to allow you to feed the cat when it's feeding time. Say something like "good kitty" in a nice tone of voice when you put the food down. It's important the cat hears a reassuring tone out of you, not neccessarily what you say. You can her spawn of the devil if you want, just make sure it sounds nice. Never yell at the cat, you don't have enough trust between you for that.

I've tamed fully wild feral cats to allow me to pet them, pick them up and one actually lives in my house now and sleeps with me at night. He's the sweetest cat ever. It takes patience and caring, but it'll be worth it so you can at least walk downstairs with no problems. GL

BTW - that alpha stuff works with dogs, not cats. Cats have a hierarchy within their colonies, but as an outsider you DO NOT fit into that hierarchy. Therefore any agrressive actions will precipitate more dislike and hatred from the cat. You can only play alpha once you're part of the colony.

Fear is not the same as respect. A cat that fears you might just as likely bite you or piss on your clothes as run from you. A cat that respects you will leave you alone.

This cat seems to have already established herself as aggressive though. Your roommates cat probably did not.

ya the owner is real nice, I'm sure if I ask I can get some treats, but I hate the fact that I have to put down a treat in front of her like a tribute. I think another reason y this cat hates me because I came from a house with a dog, so maybe she smelled something?

No, some cats just don't react well to new people taking up residence if their territory. My black cat, the one that was feral, will not come out from under my bed when new people are in the house and I still can't pick him up or hold him in front of anyone else unless they remain completely stationary and make no noise. It's just a matter of trust. The cat doesn't trust you. Quickest way to earn a cats trust is through food.

If the cat scratches or bites you.. hold your arm there. Show it that it doesnt hurt and he'll give in. Every so often it might get all aggressive and in that case hold its paws or something.

Scratches hurt more if you panic and pull away anyway.
