film effect, anyone know?

there's this effect i just learned about today and i don't remember what it was called but basically it focuses on the main person on the screen, like all the colours around the person will be darker and out of focus. what effect is that? lock when answered please.

nah, this was on like final cut pro it was something like 'matte' but i'll look for those two, i'm trying to find a similar effect on sony vegas 9 atm since thats what i got right now at home.

yes, sorta, its not so much a desaturated effect but it darkens and unfocuses the background.
like what realest put, sorta like crimsons but that looks desaturated. is that what it is called in sony vegas, depth of field?

In sony vegas you have to create the depth of field effect through the use of a mask.

well in photography it is called bokeh ( which is the depth of field ) and light falloff ( generally the corners of a photo frame will receive less light, so the image become darker and the colours become less saturated )
