[NEWS] man under investigation for self defence

Post by user »

Police are investigating whether charges should be laid against a Vancouver jewelry store owner who shot at three men as they tried to rob his shop.

“This is an ongoing investigation with regards to the robbery and the shot that was fired, and detectives are still gathering evidence as far as what (crimes) may have been committed,” Const. Lindsey Houghton said yesterday.

Houghton said three men entered Atson’s Jewellers near Robson and Hamilton streets around 10:20 on Tuesday morning and started smashing display cases with a hammer.

One of the men had a gun.

“It appears the owner got out a firearm that he had stored at the store and fired one shot in the direction of one of the suspects. All three of the suspects then ran out of the store to a waiting vehicle,” Houghton said.

“We certainly don’t want people arming themselves,” he added. “We want people to be good witnesses.

We want people to phone 9-1-1 and allow officers to arrive and attend and to use our tools and our expertise.”

*The firearm the owner used was a legally own and licensed hunting rifle.

I plan on having a gun in my house just in case.

As for this guy, if he gets persecuted, I'll be pissed.

I'm glad I don't have the need for a gun and never will.

American's are some of the few people who feel the need to have a gun.

No sir. American. It's still dumb though to not be able to defend yourself now.

Even still though. Anyone trying to rob me, I'll shoot them dead on sight no questions asked.

I had some serious lulz at that dumb ass law.

Someone is robbing me at gunpoint. I kill them. I get locked up. LOL, total fail.

Are you serious? Anything of mine im gonna protect it, whether it be my dog or my grandma, or my 75 cent snickers. Im not just gonna LET someone take my things when i can defend myself and keep my things. Thats idiotic seriously. The robbers deserve whatever they get.

what if you are not doing anything, and a cop comes up to you, with his/her finger on the trigger, with the intent to shoot you

are you authorized to defend yourself or is it still assault on a police officer

Lol you gotta be kidding me. You're talking about someone's life. Robber or not, you can't just shoot someone like that.

Well it looks like we have:

A) People without guns saying that you have no right to defend your property.
and
B) People with guns (me) saying you do.

If someone breaks into my shit and starts taking things, and they have balls enough to do it while armed, they're going to get what they deserve. Law be damned, I haven't heard of people being sent to prison in free countries like the US for defending their homes from intruders with guns.

IMO the jeweler should be well within his rights to not only shoot at the intruders but to wound or even kill them should it come down to it. If they are armed themselves their motives are clear: We're taking your shit and if you don't like it we will kill you. My way of responding is to kill them first.

I was talking from a moral aspect.

Here in the Netherlands we call the Police when people break in your house. Works fine and noone dies.

Reise wrote:My way of responding is to kill them first.

lol. Thats just how you dislocate society even further. Lets all use our guns because other people might use their guns. Over time robbers will bring heavier guns, and you will build fences with barbed wire around your 'property' right?

Here in the Netherlands I can walk around without having to worry about people carrying a gun around. Feels good man.

A gun's a gun. Don't need to have it all the time either.

To be honest I might be able to relate if I lived anywhere near the Netherlands, but I don't. To me you've got a choice: Arm yourself and you're that much better off in case shit goes down, or don't and put yourself at their mercy. Ethics aside, statistics have some powerful things to say on the subject of guns vs. no guns.

Spoiler!

Regardless, if the man ends up in jail for defending his shop, just be glad you don't live in Canada. The police would rather you'd be robbed blind or dead than helping yourself.
