Faster Net

THE Federal Government has announced the "largest infrastructure decision in Australia's history" after deciding not to award the national broadband network contract to a company.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the Government would lead the development of a national fibre-to-the-home broadband network up to "100 times faster than what many people use now".
The ambitious project will take up to eight years, cost $43 billion, create tens of thousands of jobs and will see fibre-optic cable laid out to individual houses.
The fibre-optic network, providing speeds of up to 100 megabits per second, will cover 90 per cent of Australians, while the rest will have access to a mix of wireless and satellite connections.
Yey. Might take a while, but will be well worth it. It would make a mess of my current 200kb/s download speed ;l. Perhaps Australia won't have the slowest internet after all! Though at a cost of $40+ billion, tax payers may have to pay that.

Unfortunately this will likely never be a gov't project in Canada, mostly because it would cost a hell of a lot more than $43 billion to get it to every home.

Damn going from what you guys have now to that, that would be a huge improvement. If only they would loosen up on the caps.

hahaha, don't fall for this telstra rubbish, all they are doing is making more areas ADSL2+ capable. ADSL2+ speeds aren't great when you look at what your getting at your house. Top speeds is something like 22mbps which you'd get up to 4mbps at your end tops.
If you read the fine print your purchasing speed in megabits not megabytes from telstra. what you get at your end is in bytes but its the most you can get most of the time. 8 bits = 1 byte.
Prices will stay the same, we will continue to have worse broadband than Mexico.

It isn't too bad here. We've got quite a steady economy and a somewhat smart government. Our government has been praised by Prime Minister of the UK, and President of the United States on how he's held up our economy and so far kept us out of recession.
You also must think. This operation stimulates jobs. Jobs for those who make the cables, those who have to lay it, those who oversee it, those who manage it. etc.
------------------------------
I don't care about the price, I'd pay more than I already do ($130/mnth) for faster internet.

100 megabits per second? God dam i can't wait. Im still on 256k, downloading at a max of 27kbs sucks >_<
And Snoopy is spot on with our economic situation. Unlike a lot of countries we are holding up pretty well. Obviously we aren't as strong as we were during the boom but compared to other countries on a general level we have a strong position. Lowered interest rates and petrol prices have given people the freedom to spend, i found i was struggling more during the boom than i am now. I love this recession, i have a stable job and im spending less and less money. I hope the world never recovers from it, i wont be complaining.

Price we pay for living on the driest inhabited country in the world I guess.
$130 a month gets me "Ultra High Speed ##" "60gb/month". Yet, when downloading from American servers I struggle to get over 60kbps.

@Twist: lol da.
It's rumored to cost around $200/month.CONSUMERS have been warned they will have to pay at least $200 a month to use the Federal Government's high-speed broadband network - or pay less for slower speeds.
The Government this week unveiled a plan to build a $43 billion national network promising speeds of 100 megabits a second - 100 times faster than now available
