I'd hate to have to clean up this stuff. So I'd called that vandalism, very cool vandalism but still vandalism.

Its vandalism. Art makes you think or feel emotion. That's just copying the same patterns all the other graffiti thugs do.

mhh...Can be good or can be bad, personaly I'd say this is vandalism. cus it just doesn't look good nor usefull. I would be art if it had a real meaning (and maybe looked a little bit better).

It all depends where it is, to call it vandalism or art.

you have a very shitty definition of art. I feel nothing when i look at the Mona Lisa....to me it might as well be a photograph of some ugly old lady i'll never know or care about like the millions of others out there but its value is considered priceless and it is an established work of art...

that being said i think those guys are committing vandalism but i don't think all graffiti is vandalism...

Banksy....look it up if you want to see real street art....

This.

Remembered watching a video ( or was it one T.V? Can never remember anymore) where they asked the same question, Graffiti or Art? What it was was a video promoting an indoor skate park where graffiti artist were encouraged to do their thing on the ramps walls--where ever they could find the space. Looked pretty cool.

Then again I've always believed in zero restrictions when it comes to art, use whatever is in your disposal. Just remember that if you get caught you know what's coming.

Just doesn't look nice or good when it is all over buildings, walls and bridges. But when it is displayed properly then it is art.

Art if made on the right places.

I mean, legal graffiti = art, retarded teens tagging = vandalism (I can't believe I did it once)

Art. The walls look dull without it, but it should make some sense, like in the picture provided. If it's some random drawings, that's vandalism.

I find it ugly. Looks like the rest of the stuff on places it shouldn't be, same style but more talent. All the trash on the ground only helps it look worse. If someone did it on a tapestry maybe but meh.

I could paint the Mona Lisa on the side of Walmart and it'd still be vandalism. Vandalism can be art, and vice versa.

Can't actually paint the Mona Lisa though..

That's a very narrow minded statement.
I know I get butterflies when I look at some graffiti as you would if you saw a great piece of art in your opinion.
I suppose you're on the right track and that I could argue it's art because if brings out a reaction in me and I can read the emotion on the wall, but on a personal level.

And I suppose it's vandalism in a way, but I like to think that the world is a canvas.

What if I posted this, art or vandalism?:

I don't know about you, but if that graffiti was on the side of my house, I would care less about the art and be very angry at the person who vandalized my house.

The Mona Lisa has a meaning. I agree it doesn't bring emotions to me either but its making a statement.
The Mona Lisa's famous smile represents the sitter in the same way that the juniper branches represent Ginevra Benci and the ermine represents Cecilia Gallerani in their portraits, in Washington and Krakow respectively. It is a visual representation of the idea of happiness suggested by the word "gioconda" in Italian. Leonardo made this notion of happiness the central motif of the portrait: it is this notion which makes the work such an ideal. The nature of the landscape also plays a role. The middle distance, on the same level as the sitter's chest, is in warm colors. Men live in this space: there is a winding road and a bridge. This space represents the transition between the space of the sitter and the far distance, where the landscape becomes a wild and uninhabited space of rocks and water which stretches to the horizon, which Leonardo has cleverly drawn at the level of the sitter's eyes.

I wouldn't consider all paintings to be art either

you do realize that entire paragraph means nothing to me don't you. To me it's not a statement. To me its a painting of a lady...end of story....im not impressed. So based on your definition then the Mona Lisa is not art...

the truth is that art is subjective, just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You can't define what makes something art or not because thats only your opinion. What is art to some is not art to others just like the Mona Lisa is crap to me to alot of other people its a wonderful statement...

I'm kinda' 50/50 on this one. I used to go to 5 Points NY and I like most of the stuff in there - the whole building is basically a giant collaborative artwork (inside and out) and I'm also a fan of Banksy's "work" but on the other hand, I fcking hate seeing all these douchebags wiping their garbage all over the place. There's even a few of them who put their trash tag over other people's work.

Well, long story short...

SHIT:

More 5 Pointz:

I'll take current pictures of 5 Pointz when I get the chance.

And by the way...to comment on your discussion about "vandalism vs art"..the best way to kill graffiti is to legalize it. Graffiti: It's art because it's vandalism, it's vandalism because it's graffiti; but not all graffiti is art.

@ Izmester and Disconn3cted:
I understand about you saying who painted it and where it was, but lets assume its on a building you see everyday on the way to school/work and you have no idea who did it.

Banksy is incredible, what he can do in a night always impresses me.
If you're looking at the English scene 10foot is also amazing.

Part2ism also.
