I need you quick witted SRFers to help me,
I'm having a party next friday in a remote area (I can specify if you want), there is NO power plugs. So no power.
Is there anyway I can hook 2 4 foot speakers and an amp up to a battery or something to get power for 4 or 5 hours?
MUCHLOVE

Is that much trouble to get a hold of? And how does it work?

I'm pretty sure they could be rented. Possibly from Camping shops, they can be purchased there too. How it works: To my understanding you put fuel in one side and it makes electricity

. I don't know the details.

look for a tool rental place in the nearest city, you should be able to rent a generator there
of course it will make some noise too because it will run on gasoline

Go find a Honda EU2000i. It should be enough to power radios/speakers, and it's pretty quiet (54 db) as I'm assuming your party may be going late. Hope you can rent one, otherwise they're at least $900 depending on what country you're in.
In a pinch you can hook two of them together with a kit for double the power. Two of them are enough to power a small air conditioner and microwave at the same time, or for that matter a small house.

I think you would want to have some form of power source other than one for music...just in case.
So I would advice renting a generator with a low-noise/silencer feature (yes they have those). bring lots of extension cords and ask the rental shop for advice on how much gas you should bring. If you can get a car to supply enough power for those speakers, that would be even better.

Some hardware stores and wholesaler's can probably rent generators.
They are noisy as hell though so be sure to put it outside with protection against rain or something.
If it's a outdoor location without electricity you might want to keep some heating and drinking water in mind too.

Thanks so much guys!
Well here's the thing, the party is in Drain tunnels.
So I think the Generator would echo like hell, Unless I can leave it on the surface (where it might attract everyones attention.)
So I was thinking is there any decent battery powered speakers or is it more just a "go to your local rent store and see what they have" kind of thing.
And no, not amish, ha

If you'll have a car parked near the party spot you can buy this converter box thing that plugs into a car cigarette lighter that has regular plugs on the end.. I'll google it and edit my post in a sec I forget what they are called exactly. They should be inexpensive at RadioShack or something.

54 db is very quiet for a generator and there are settings for super-quiet mode (i.e. if it is not running full throttle, supplying 2000w).
If you're worried about a generator echoing, then I would assume normal conversation @ 60 db will echo just as much in a drain tunnel.
As for the car converter - the car might need to be running, depending on how long your party lasts. A car battery isn't designed to discharge heavily over the course of time; you'd need a marine or RV battery/golf cart battery for that.
Sorry that I'm no help on the speakers. There are plenty of laptop speakers that are battery-powered but they'd die pretty quick and not give out good sound. I guess you could do some decent powered speakers, a 12v -> 110v converter and bring two deep-cycle batteries for a good 3-4 hours of power. It just depends on how much power you are pulling.
* Near total silence - 0 dB
* A whisper - 15 dB
* Normal conversation - 60 dB
* A lawnmower - 90 dB
* A car horn - 110 dB
* A rock concert or a jet engine - 120 dB
* A gunshot or firecracker - 140 dB

That car inverter sounds good, but yeh, I dont know if it'd last that long?
I'm only powering an amp and one 4 foot speaker at the moment.
Would that need much power?

Do not Farking put it inside the tunnels or you will all die from CO poisoning.

How many amps does it draw? A 4 foot tall speaker could be anywhere from 30 watts to 300 watts.
As for the drain tunnels, do they have ANY ventilation? Didn't ask that.

Generators release carbon monoxide into the air, which is poisonous. Since you are going to be inside tunnels... it will all be trapped and the concentration ratio compared to oxygen will be greater, you all will start inhaling CO instead of oxygen and end up dead or in the hospital.
You can leave it outside and use some extension cord or something though.

The tunnels have a ventalation grid every 100 or 200 metres.
Pretty sure the one amp is 200 watts.
I'll check on that though.

Fair, thanks for the warning, we'll be careful as to what we use now.
