Heath Ledger won the award for Best Supporting Actor.

Code: Select all

HEATH Ledger has won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for his chilling portrayal of The Joker in Dark Knight.

Ledger was the unbackable favourite in the category.  His win is only the second posthumous acting honour in Oscars history and completes a sweep of major awards for the performance.

Bookmakers had Ledger at odds of 50-to-1 to win. Other quoted odds had the late actor at 250-to-1.  US media had called Ledger a "sure thing", while the New York Times said simply: "No contest, no debate, Heath Ledger".

In a moment which had Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway in tears as his family accepted the Award on behalf of the late Heath Ledger. The Oscar is to be put away in a trust fund until his daughter Matilda turns 18.

Rest In Peace Heath!

Regardless of whether you are a comic fanoboy or not, what can you say about this movie that makes it "pretty crappy"? The movie itself is incredible.

Add me to the list though I'm not ashamed and I doubt it'll be the best movie I ever saw.

Dark Knight is a bit overrated imo.
Heath truly deserved the oscar, dead or not. His play as the Joker made the movie, if it weren't for Heath the movie would suck large balls. But still, Dark Knight isn't as good as people make it out to be.

I agree with woutr. Without heath ledger the dark knight wouldnt be so good. But imo it's still a good movie. Batman begins was good, but not great. The Dark Knight is great, thx to heath ledger.

Heath ledger deserved that oscar, im happy he got it

Idk. I watched it and it didn't appeal me much. It's just me I guess.

For Heath Ledger to play the role of a villain and still be liked for both his acting and the characteristics portrayed by the role is an amazing thing. Usually the villains are the first to be forgotten but not in the case of Heath. Well done Heath

Hard to explain :)

thats like saying without Marlon Brando The Godfather wouldn't be good. Heath was a part of the movie, the main villain is a BIG role, just as big as the main hero, they play off each other. So Heath is a part of TDK and you can't take him out of the equation when he's in it because then you wouldn't be talking about TDK you'd be talking about some other movie....

Point well taken. My point is just that Heath Ledger is the only thing good about the movie. A movie can be a bit like a dish: all ingredients compliment each other and create something nice, or there's really something tasty in it, but not much else. Like a wok meal and a juicy steak, respectively.

@satman: Why aren't you surprised we aren't talking about Slumdog millionaire? The discussion was about Dark Knight anyways. I think it's wrong to think no one here appreciates movies without a lot of action and because Slumdog Millionaire is a drama movie no one here saw it.
I saw Slumdog Millionaire, it was a good movie. Not an 8 oscar good movie. I think some of slumdog's oscars should've went to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I guess by the title it was to be about all films :P

And i am shocked you haven't heard about it, it won 6 golden globes and 7 BAFTAS and
grossed 150million world wide, not bad for a movie that was only going to originally
come out on DVD.

Also The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was overrated, am glad that out of the big
3 movie award shows (Oscars, BAFTAS and Golden Globes) it only won awards for
technical aspects and not for acting or any others. Film was only a taking point
because of how they made Brad Pit look old and then young. It was so boring once
we start to get old (young :P ). Likewise with slumdog, brilliant film. But the
best parts of it were the flashbacks to when the characters where children.

So your saying that Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, and Maggie Gyllenhaal all did terrible jobs, the cinematography was shitty, the plot was stupid, the editing was dumb, the writing was pitiful, and the lighting was just a crap job all around, the special effects were lame, not to mention the soundtrack which was the pits?

Cause all those things went into making that movie great, hell the top shot on the first page includes lighting, directing, and editing and that is a great fuckin picture...

This isn't gonna win ol' Colonel Sanders any brownie points! Mel Gibson has sensationally suggested that the untimely death-by-overdose of Heath Ledger wasn't an accident, going so far as to say he saw Heath as an "impending tragedy".

Mel, who starred alongside Heath in 2000 flick The Patriot, told Jimmy Kimmel Live that he thought the official ruling that Heath's death was accidental was a load of bull.

"I didn't really know the ins and outs of what was up with him, but I don't believe it was just an accident," he said.

"Maybe I could have called him. When you see sort of an impending tragedy or something that might go wrong, it just felt like I should do something about it."

Mel also confessed he had called Britney Spears recently to discuss her not-so-recent problems.
