"Fourteen killed in Australian wildfires: police February 7, 2009 - 11:04PM Fourteen people died in wildfires sweeping through southeastern Australia during a heatwave Saturday, with arsonists blamed for starting several of the blazes, police said.
"This is an absolute tragedy for (Victoria) state and we believe the figure may even get worse," said deputy police commissioner Kieran Walshe." (Taken from the age website)

I was driving with my family today and saw a huge fire in the median strip of the freeway. We were blind for like 10 secs while we were driving through the smoke. It was around 40degrees.

shit now gone up to 66
Sixty-six people are confirmed dead in Victoria's bushfires, far surpassing the state's toll of 47 in the 1983 Ash Wednesday blazes.
The number of dead is likely to rise even further as blazes continue to ravage the state with almost 312,000 hectares affected. At least 700 homes have been destroyed - 550 of those in Kinglake and surrounding areas.

Be...cause I can? I put smiles everywhere, not just here. I did think, hey maybe this isn't the place to put smile, but I did anyway.

Estimates are placing the total death toll will be 170+
There was a doctor on the news last night who basically said that everybody with severe burns in hospital is going to die, purely because they don't have the manpower to treat everyone.

If it actually happened to you. I think you would think differently. At the moment, all you care about is how you look. But you'll soon realise there's more to life than just your appearance.

An old member here, Buster5995, is quite close to the fires as well. Last i heard from him i think they said they were 8kms away? Not too sure exactly, i have a shocking memory. That was a few days ago now so i will try contact him when i can. One of my old school mates and my ex's dad are very close to the blazes as well, im quite lucky there haven't been any blazes up here in NSW.

What sucks is after the tsunami in Indonesia. The Australian government gave 1 billion dollars in aid to them. Yet when we have a disaster in our own country, they so far have only forked out 10million. Quite sad, we should aid ourselves before others!

When they find the arsonists they should burn them to death like the people they killed.

There's a good chance they would get killed anyway. So many people down Victoria would kill them without thinking twice. Though I'd like to ask them if they like fire so much, then chuck them in one. Disgusting people, how they can even do this.
One fire apparently started when hoons burned out a car in Kinglake.

Yer it's horrible, If you've been following this you know that there was a wind change, well if that wind change hadn't of happened we would have been hit by the fire, people just two streets down from us were being evacuated and they close the roads

Which is not gonna' happen and that is why the current justice system fails. I don't get why "human rights" apply to people like that. They should have lost that privilege after committing such crimes.
Anyway, sorry to hear that.

It's not just that. It would be hard to take care of yourself if you're fingers were burned off and little kids would be afraid of you.

166 Dead - Expected to go over 200.
10.5 million dollars raised in 1 day by the Australian citizens. Coles (Supermarket grocer) will be donating its Friday profits to Victorian fire charity (they usually make about 5 million or more a day).
