So yeah, i sort of checked the web and in various sites, they say i need this "anti-static" wrist strap for when i need to ground myself so i don't short circuit any electrical works.

So yeah, i might be later on taking apart my bro.s laptop, which is just busted where it can't charge the battery and stuff, freaking geek squad is like asking for a shit load.

So yeah, my question is, what are the consequences of opening electrical components like a laptop, if i don't have this anti-static wrist band.

and can i just use those cheap plastic gloves, the one orthodontists use, and use it like sort of a protective covering from my own static build up,

and make my way into the laptop?

take the battery out and dont care about anti-static stuff

Just touch metal and that grounds yourself.

So how to do it:
take out battery
touch door knob or some shit
do whatever the **** you need, make sure to touch the door knob every once in a while
put back together
put back in battery
eat a cookie

the problem is what if static builds up on the way back after you touched the door nob

i went to 2 difference computer shops for work experience (mandatory high school thing)
1. first place specializes it support with laptop rentals as secondary income. grounding yourself with the wrist strap was pretty much mandatory there

2. second place was just the second part of a hardware shop, the technician there doesn't believe in static, i asked him about not using straps. he said that he actually shocked the hardware of a laptop once, and nothing bad happened, so he never wore it again

Over rate, just be sure to touch something grounded before you work on it. Have fun fixing a laptop.

I never ground myself and i've never had anything happen. Only one time I farked up my harddrive but that was because I unplugged it while it was running.

Simply don't brush your hair or rub anything for 20 minutes and you should be good, stick a metal pole in the ground outside and touch it if you want to be too careful. Anti-static wrist strap .. lol kind of sounds like one of those magnetic pillow things

not hard to fix a comp without damaging it, just make sure their is no current going though the system when you take it appart, only touch the edges of the moutherboard and cards, dont use magentic screw drivers at all, anti static your self by touching something metal thats grounded

other then that you aint never gona do hard les your careles

The joy of fixing and building computers...been doing it for 6 years and i still find it to be the most fun thing to do. But yeah just touch a piece of metal and your grounded, if your really paranoid stand on some cardboard, and dont work on carpet...

nylon is a synthetic material which creates a lot of static

a simple homemade van de graaff generator uses teflon and nylon rollers and rubber belt to create static electricity

dont use anything synthetic thats why i said you would prolly be better off without gloves, iv been tinkering with computers for years and never done any damage so just dont worry all you got to remember is dont touch the pins of the card and if possible only touch the edges where their is no connections or circuitry finally NO MAGNETIC TOOLS, after that not much damage you can do, i think its oblivous to say make sure its turned off with the cables unplugged
