What they said, you will know when that person comes out with a new video. Haven't you ever had a magazine subscription? just like that in the perspective that you get the newest issue of the service, items, etc. that you subscribed to. Is that a little more clear?

It makes your e-ego bigger. But the function is that, if you subscribe to makebananacakes and he makes a new video about how to enhance the flavor of Caribbean bananas in a pineapple cake then you will get a message when you are logged in with your account in the front page that says makebananacakes has uploaded a new video.
