In short:

PLATTEVILLE, Colo. -- A farm couple got a huge surprise when they opened their fields to anyone who wanted to pick up free vegetables left over after the harvest -- 40,000 people showed up.

Joe and Chris Miller's fields were picked so clean Saturday that a second day of gleaning -- the ancient practice of picking up leftover food in farm fields -- was canceled Sunday. " 'Overwhelmed' is putting it mildly," Chris Miller said. "People obviously need food."

How bloody sad is that. No problems with the peopel needed food obviously .. but sad it has come to this. Average yanks not being able to ground themselves cause of neglect towards them.

Yeah the prices for veggies and shit are going up bigtime here. With Thanksgiving around the corner it's not hard to see why people would just run up and get their food for free.

i don't see what so special about this. This is nothing new for the US. Anyone whose had their eyes open has been saying we need to deal with our starving here (and there are alot of them) b4 we start dealing with other ppl's starving. But of course, no one cared/s

its not just the US thats in crisis. This is probably only making the news to highlight an impossible issue where change is expected to come magically. The whole world is feeling this crunch riot are already breaking out in the caribbean over food shortages. When it hits the coast thats when it'll start making real news over here...

The "in your face experiences" always leave the worst impressions behind, but this, this is just the worst..

Actually europeans arent to blame seeing as how in africa theres a part thats rich as hell and a part thats poor as shit, and any money send to africa goes straight to the rich part.

Africa was conquered by many nations (mostly Europe) It never really had a nation of it's own till recently, so it was very difficult to help these people.

Anyways,
Of course 40,000 people will show up, IT'S FREE!!

If they were giving free Xbox 360's and free play station 3. I'm pretty sure you will show up too.

Mr. Subsidy won't change that. ;)
OnT: Lobby congress to stop subsidizing the agriculture sector? Boom, affordable veggies and more jobs. Yay!

I'm not comparing the price, nor am I comparing the value. These people know free vegetables are being given out, so they went for it. Just like if they were giving out free Xbox 360s you and I would go get it.

But you have cheap Gas prices compared to some places in the world - even cheaper than here in Australia. Prices of food often go up here, especially in Summer when crops burn due to heat and lack of water, cyclones, and storms. Meat and Dairy products go up due to lack of farmers in harsh conditions. More places than the US are suffering from these kinds of things, however it kinda comes down to how your government can fix it. Looking at the US, Bush failed.

Would you wake up 4am in the morning in the cold weather just to queue for a bag of veggies? I wouldn't, but I sure as heck would do it a for a gaming console.
