Your opinions on the new Ipod Touch (2nd Gen)

Everyone knows that christmas is comeing

( No offense to those who dont celebrate it )
Some of you know that I want a Itouch (2nd Gen) 8G for christmas this year. I wanted to know what you think about it, and how those who auctually own one, how do you like it, pros and cons( any low battery life? ALL the pros and cons

).
I rescently watched youtube videos on comparing the 1st gen. Itouch and the 2nd gen. The second gen afaik has a lower price (239$US) and the first, 299$, both for 8gb. The second gen in my opinion is the better choice, and cheaper. You can listen to your music without the earphones, (internal speaker ) A round-ish shape, and just a little bit more features then the old one.
I also heard you can "JailBreak" it, which gives you something like free 3rd party apps.? If the discussion about this is illegal on the forum, any mod can just post for me to remove it, and it will be done.
So for those who have any ideas, anything you'd like to say about the Itouch 8GB, just post, i'd really like all of your opinions

Alot of people say its worth the money to buy it and it really looks cool to use daily. ( also, ill be using music off my computer, and will not buy from the itunes store )
Some details I know about the Itouch 2nd gen.
-3.5inch Widescreen
-Able to use Myspace
-No flash on safari whatsoever
-Internal speaker that allows you to listen to music without earphones, but dosent have that much high quality
-has basic things like cacuculater, and a clock
- Safari web browser
- Itunes Wifi app
- Wifi
- Cools apps ( guitar and piano, etc.)
Thats all I can think of as of now. If im missing anything, be sure to inform me

Questions-
- Could Safari use meebo.com to log onto an "IM" and can you use it to im people?
- Dose the Itunes store give out free apps?
- Is the Wi-Fi speed and connection descent for Safari and Youtube?
*edit*- You could text on the Itouch? ( rumor )
Thanks again to all who post

Your questions.
- Could Safari use meebo.com to log onto an "IM" and can you use it to im people?
Yes, it works. Though is slightly slow - however it works.
- Dose the Itunes store give out free apps?
To my understanding, no. However if you get the crack you get a program called "Installer" which enables you to download plenty of Themes, and can download Apps when in Wi-Fi area.
- Is the Wi-Fi speed and connection descent for Safari and Youtube?
I'm pretty sure the speed that your iPod will download at is determined by your Wireless connection - which if a good speed your Safari will run fast. Also with the crack you get a program called (Well I can't remember, but it's runs like a Youtube browser, however instead of just watching the video. it allows you to download it to your iPod and watch it from there).
*edit*- You can text on the Itouch???
I'm pretty sure you can't and have downloaded programs that allow free SMS through the Installer app. Was not successful, probably because I didn't have a Verizon connection and the app was made for iPhone.
Hope this was somewhat helpful.

A very large percent of the apps in the App Store are free. There is an app that allows you to IM people on different networks (also free), so no need for Meebo.
Safari and YouTube speeds depends on your wireless connection. "Jailbreaking" the iPod will enable you to install 3rd-party apps, but you should really research more before you Jailbreak it to reduce the chance of errors/bricking the iPod.

Could you give more details on this "Installer"?

From what Fug Dup has said, there are free apps? ( confused with his post and snoopy's )
And about "Jailbreaking". Has anyone done it and dose it require a update for every iTouch update? And the most obvious, for those who have done it, is it safe and have you ever had probelms with it?

I had mine Jailbroken. Worked fine. Though I had it done in Hong Kong and I, myself. Have no idea how to do it. I also think by JailBreaking your iPod it voids any warrenty.

Um, I dont see anything but a quote of my post?
@Snoopy
I'd thought that it was a simple process of downloading/installing something into the Ipod, but is the processs similar to the "chipping" of the wii, where you have to install a certain thing to let you use the 3rd party apps?

As far as I know, yes. It's something complicated like that. Which is then compatible with a program from a computer. I'm sure there's different ways of doing it, this is just how I had mine done.
Similar to the Wii, Xbox, and Xbox 360 Microchips.

^That may be the case. Which means it's a whole lot easier - Which is a good thing. Though do be careful which sites you upload things from.

Theres jailbreaking available for the 2nd gen itouch?
And it voids your warrantee if you jailbreak it; so dont buy warrantee if you think you're gonna jailbreak it

You can see for yourself if you'd like. Download iTunes if you don't already have it and go to the iTunes Store. From there, you can visit the App Store and see all the apps that are available for free.
Jailbreaking has never required the installation of any chips of any kind on the iPod Touch/iPhone itself. If someone claims to have installed a chip on your iPod Touch/iPhone to jailbreak it and charged you for it, chances are you got scammed. All Jailbreaking does is basically modifies your device's firmware.
Go to this website (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/) and look for the latest release of the iPod Touch 'Pwnage Tool'. It will instruct you to get your device into recovery mode so that a modified version of the device's firmware can be installed. This modified firmware includes the Installer app which can be used to download third-party apps from. It is actually a more complicated process than the earlier days of Jailbreaking, which only required visiting a website and clicking a button.

There is currently no Jailbreaking support for the 2nd gen iPod Touch.
While Jailbreaking does void the warranty, you could always restore the device's firmware to the factory default.

I'm pretty sure there is no jailbreaking for 2nd gen, but I'm not sure. I actually think that's partly why they came out with a new itouch, so they could get people to stop jailbreaking them.
There are indeed free apps, alot of them are free nowadays.
Also, be careful if you see a video on youtube, don't trust it right away, do research on it and stuff, 'cause it could just be some noob trying to give you a virus.

It's cool if you're on a campus with wireless, otherwise you'd be in reach of a computer anyways.
I don't really see the point, phones are so cheap now that they're a better choice. My cell phone costs about $40 a month and it has unlimited web browsing from anywhere, unlimited live tv, and a bunch of other stuff that the itouch doesn't have - as well as the standard features like music and videos.
If you're going to get any kind of music player, I would definitely get an itouch, but there's more functionality out of a good phone.

The thing is, the monthly cost.
Almost every wi-fi conncetion is free, and almost everywhere in the U.S has a wi-fi connection ( or at least near me ) Assuming you dont break/lose/get stolen the ipod, sooner or later the Ipod would save you money, if you get what im saying, ( 40/month, in 6 months you'd would of had paid 240$, the cost of the Ipod, whereas if you get the ipod and use it for 6+ months, you would overcome the value of it, and you can watch vids on it

) ) So thats my take on your opinion. I also already have a phone, ONLY for the phone, noo texting/internet cause it isnt my plan

That was kind of my point. An unlimited data plan for my phone costs an extra $10 a month, includes live tv as well. My thinking is that if you're paying for a cellphone bill already, you add a tiny amount and you get better service.

Oic. Well my comeback is that I dont pay for my bill. lol. Being thirteen dosent help cause I cant get a job yet, but i'll apply for a job over the summer ( whereas ill be 14 and i can work at publix >.> )So I think for my situation, the Ipod would be better.

Yeah, like I said, if you're going to get any kind of music player, you might as well get an ipod touch. It's not a bad device.

Indeed. Plus it'll feel advanced cause it has a touch screen, and for the extra 100$ ( comparing the iTouch 8GB to the new 8GB chromatic ) i'd say it has ALOT more features and all those goodies
