Last Week of School

Yey, finally my last week of School for 2008 has arrived. Summer holidays begin, as do 'Schoolies' (Biggest Party in the Southern Hemisphere)

Queensland's Gold Coast, particularly Surfers Paradise, maintains its status as the largest single venue for this revelry, attracting tens of thousands of Schoolies.

I've got my apartment rented and am ready to party :)

On the southern hemisphere it is summer when it is winter on the northern hemisphere.
I guess it is primary school geography. xD

This is explained by the fact that during july the sun is standing north of the equator and during december south of the equator.
:)

... But the season is still called winter, right?

I have a friend who lives in australia and he says they have winter holiday and it's long, so since he still calls it winter I assume they still call it winter, and if not, then doesn't that get extremely confusing when talking to people who are not from your hemisphere?

no, im pretty sure they call it summer cuz it's hotter. summer and winter are not names for the months, but rather names for the season, and the season is determined by the temperature (or some position with respect to the sun stuff) :P

K. I thought the seasons simply reffered to where the Earth was on its journey around the Sun, I didn't realize it was relative. I guess you learn something new every day :)

Ugh, our Summer (Dec, Jan, Feb) is also out wet-season. That though,
being a good thing seeing as we're in a constant drought in South/East Queensland.
Generally rains overnight, and is sunny the next day, making it muggy as hell.
Like today -.-; Average temperature here is about 30 Celsius in summer (86oF) - but can get up
to 40-45 Celsius (104-113oF). Considering I live directly across from the beach, and have a strong
Easterly wind. When it's hot it usually comes from the west.

We call Summer Summer, and Winter winter. I can't believe how people didn't know that our seasons were opposite.
Then again:

Code: Select all

Ok, i seem to see people talking about the whole, wth you have summer while we have winter, thing.

The seasons are different for north and south equator, when its summer north, its winter south, and vise versa.

It is all due to the tilted axis of the Earth.

OT: Hope you have fun, swimming near a lot of hot jail baits :)
