My dad's HP laptop (dv9000) had the defective GPU and you could see the issues right away. Wireless connection stops working at first. Eventually it'll start taking the computer longer to boot up or the screen will stop functioning all together.

The laptop models experiencing those issues get an additional 12 months of warranty, so if your laptop model is on the list you can get a free replacement before the warranty expires.

You really shouldn't buy Hp in the first place man, they're pretty shitty.
But yeah, I hope you're able to get a replacement, if not, buy a toshiba, best computer company imo.

Haha, i researched for around 30 mins maybe before buying a laptop. Absolutely everywhere says to stay away from HP. And everyone recommends Dell or Toshiba - i got a Toshiba, no problems so far.

I have a dv6000 series with NVIDIA 7150M. I bought it on Feb 2008. Right now it's working well except that I keep having to deal with these annoying issues such as the screen turning into black sometimes (like 3/5 of the time--after 1-15 minutes) when I use the full-screen mode on megavideo, youtube, veoh or other video-hosting sites. That problem began about 3 months ago. Another popular one was the quickplay buttons would often cause the system to just freeze when I'm playing a full-screen game. Seriously..wtf? So I ended up deleting that program and these pretty little blue buttons are now as useless as nutless dude. Right now I'm thinking of reselling this computer and just add a couple hundred bucks to get a cheap and lighter $450-$550 gateway laptop similar to the one I chose for my cousin since his is working smoothly (partly because I maintain the damn thing since he doesn't know how to) or just invest more money in purchasing a better machine.

I don't know about DELL but I know Toshiba's a great choice since my girlfriend bought one around the time I got my HP.

To Entangle: just give it a few more months. And how the **** do you upgrade an HP dv6000 laptop's graphics card?

Edit:
If you have an HP Pav laptop, make sure you have one of those laptop fans. I'm using a Belkin one since it has a bent shape that's suitable for this thing but the flat Targus with 4 fans isn't a bad choice either.

If you're smart enough, that's the best option by far.
I don't know how to make one with a working BIOS system though lol, so that's out of the question for me.

I mean I can't complain, the laptop is great and all that, except out of the box it took like 10 mins to load into the desktop... had to get some HP update crap thing to fix that. But they make good laptops, but HP is not willing to help out customers who fell into this circle of defected GPUs that they put in their laptops.

and you think Dell or any other computer company would. LOL Dell doesn't even want a call unless you have a warranty, guy basically told me over the phone that he knew exactly how to fix my computer but if I wanted to hear it i'd have to pay far out the ass....

HP doesn't make those GPU's they just put them in their laptops. NVIDIA is a brand thats very trusted in the community. If you expect HP to pick up for NVIDIAs mistake that doesn't make sense and im sure HP would gladly refund if NVIDIA were to cover the losses. Theres alot of ppl at fault here and i hate to sound like a company rep but this is hardly the fault of HP. I'd hope they'd give discount or something but whats to stop ppl from making up BS and getting in on the deal by saying that the reason there laptop is broke is cause of GPUs...think about it

For those that care about this sort of thing, HP is by far one of the greenest companies (let alone industry wide) in existence. They are way ahead of competitors when it comes to life cycle assessment and corporate social responsibility. Properly disposing of computers is really expensive - they let our faculty gather up old computers once a year and they personally dispose of them. For a while now they've been making product choices where harmful materials are not used. One example that comes to mind is that they phased out a standard toxic flame retardant - at their expense.

That with many other things makes buying from HP an ethically good decision, let alone for the quality of their products. Not only do we look at their environmental policy, but their corporate structure and function is a great model that we often use as a base for comparison.

I'm happy with Sony - Vaio Blu-Ray Notebook. Had no problems so far, made it around the world without a scratch, even on some planes in the hold, where things are often broken.

dude? hp sucks? Ive had my HP media center pc m380n for nearly 7 years now, and this comp still rocks! cost me $2000 back when i bought it, and it was the beast. 3.0 ghz CPU speed for a computer 7 years old not bad?

besides computers are supposed to die after about 5 years or so...

Hp = :)

Compaq + HP = Same company.

Had a Compaq desktop. It was faulty. Sent it in about 4 times to get fixed, and it was never fixed, the 3rd time, I even wrote them a note saying I think it's the Bios battery or the PSU, so they changed both lol.
Took it to Best Buy (had the 3 year warranty), they fixed it first time, it was a Mobo problem.

Bought a Compaq laptop, bought it was Circuit City this time, my Mum paid for the laptop and my dad insisted on getting the 3 year warranty again.
Couple months down the line, I dropped the laptop right on the hinge so it cracked it. I took it to Circuit city, they said they wouldn't fix it as it was physical damage. Compaq took it right away, had in back 2 days later (they actually send you a box, and the mail man picks it up from your door.

May 08, I bought a HP laptop. No problems with it so far. Called them up asking for recovery discs and they sent them for free the next day.

I'm very impressed with their customer service. Not so much with their ability to fix things though. I'd definitely buy a HP again though.

Btw my laptop has the 'defective' 8400m GS, but my product isn't listed.
