On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights...

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge...
WHAT ABOUT THE POOR?
"No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms." <----- Except for those "wage slaves" who have been bought by the promise of instant wealth by the moneylenders.

"All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law." <------------ Except those who cannot afford the high price of "Justice". Assign to them the overworked, under trained Public Defenders. Watch them twitch as Prosecuting Attorneys use proven techniques to increase their conviction rates without regard to Justice. If Justice is blind to race and creed, why is it that our Jails are filled predominately by those of one race, one creed?

"Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.
No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property."
<------------ Unless, and of course, they don't pay taxes on their property. Should this be the case, let the state step in and seize that property from them. They're poor, right? They can't afford to pay the tax, how can they afford to defend against the need of public greed?

"The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures." <-------------- How is it then that special interest groups have gained such a foothold in governments? How can the rich have such influence when they are the greatest minority? Plutocrats require blindness in their slaves, if we are not born blind - our eyes must be gouged out.

Depraved indifference shall rule.

What should resound within my heart as a clarion bell for Human Rights is reduced to the din of clanging tin. I witness the hallow sound of human indifference.

Yes, speak to me of Privacy as we accept bribes from those who crave to expose my nakedness. How is my privacy violated? Need you ask? Look at the information collected and wonder again why computers have terabytes. Is it for the good of the common man or is it the sheer mass of information solicited and stored about every person on the earth that demands it? Can merchants who profit by every transaction continue to rule from behind the curtain? "I am the Great and Powerful OZ!" (You may NOT look behind the curtain)

How many forms have you filled out as you apply for credit, as you apply for a job, as you enter school, as you seek to board an airplane? Consider automated data collection as you purchase merchandise - why are our cash registers all connected to massive computer systems?

Yes, speak to me of "The Right to Work" and "Fair Wage" and "Human Worth"
As you sharpen your teeth to consume the poor from the face of the earth.

Yes, speak to me of progress, dull my sight with the bright flash of self congratulation as we chase the dream of all the glitters. Let me remain bedazzled by the promise of prosperity and peace. Make pretty words for me, let my heart sing as I look away from the suffering of my neighbor.

________________________________________________________________________________

Can we not see? There are those who can't sleep if they haven't done evil, they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone fall. I would admonish each person to gain insight and keep themselves away from this rousing song of indifference to the poor. Look behind the curtain. Ask why. Why do we form categories that ignore true need. Why are we prohibited against discrimination according to "Creed" when the only creed we can agree upon is that the defenseless shall be our prey.

As we approach the 60th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights (Dec 10th 1948 - 2008) it is crucial that we include not only all members of each Race, each Creed, each Religion - but that we expand our awareness toward the needs of the unrepresented, the poor!

To put it succinctly, the omission of the one class of people worldwide who need their rights protected most is a glaring statement of indifference, is it not?
