Wisdom Teeth

Post by tedtwilliger »

My left wisdom is starting to come through incorrectly and is hurting like an absolute motherbitch. I think i may have to get it removed but according to everyone i know who has had it done, the operation its self hurts a shit load as well >_>

Anyone had it done? Does it really hurt as much as people say? Does it hurt more than the actual pain of having them growing? Considering i hate needles and I've never been to a dentist.. I'm a little freak out :(

don't worry about the needles, I hate them too, but i make te dentist use them on me. think about it this way: it's a drug that knocks you out. you wont feel the needle. and the after effect is funny. note that food tastes bad when you can feel it.
about the opperation itself...can't help you much.

I got mine pulled out shortly before school started

The operation is really short, but it hurts like a mofo when the guy sticks the needle into your gum to numb it. And when you get home, the hole where the tooth used to be will bleed for a really long time. Get ready with the paper towels and stuff. I also recommend getting an ice pack and putting it against the jaw where they pulled out the tooth because it won't hurt as much.

Erm, you never been to a dentist? O_o

OT:

Well it hurts, the operation itself is pretty cool imo lol... the needle wont hurt..but they might need to cut in ur toothflesh and drill the tooth.. (they had to with mine coz it was growing in another direction and cudnt be pulled out completly) The other tooth, yes i had done 2 at 1 time lol. 1 time pain and not 2 times :D, was pulled out completely and i found it pretty funny coz i felt it getting out there.. like it slided out of the hole lol.

In my case, the days after the operation hurted more than the operation itself, be prepared to stay home for a few days and eat yoghurt or w/e for breakfast, lunch AND dinner. 8)

I haven't, I've never needed to go before, hence why I'm kind of nervous about it now >_>

But i suppose i will just have to do it, a friend of mine got his done a few years back and all he did was complain about how much it hurt for days.. not the kind of thing that I'm looking forward to.

All mine have come through and I've got no pain at all. Shit's inconvenient sometimes with brushing and whatnot but other than that I got no problems.

But if you gotta get it done you gotta get it done. Especially if you can't even eat without it hurting you.

The drugs are worth it, I just wish I still had my wisdom teeth so that we could do it again.
I was very poor when I had my wisdom teeth extracted so I went to a "dental college" and had a group of students (they were overseen by a professor) do it for me.

The kids used a Valium I.V. as a sedative and after the first injection they "checked" me by asking, "Okay, we're going to yank your teeth out, do you mind?" I was a little hesitant so they said, "Let's take him down a little," and gave me more. About a minute later I could care less what they did to me. They injected lidocaine to numb the tooth and I heard the "CRACK" when the tooth left the tooth socket but there was no pain. NONE. After I was sore and yes, there was some bleeding. I couldn't afford "proper" gauze pads so they told me to use "feminine napkins". Yeah, I put cut up tampons in my mouth. It worked.

30 years later and I can only remember how great it felt to be on that level of Valium. My thought at the time was, "I can understand why so many housewives are addicted to this stuff."

If you're overly concerned about pain they can "pre-numb" the area where they will make the injection. Sometimes that means they will put a Q-Tip (coated with a mild local anesthetic) in place, other times they can "paint" the injection site area. Just talk to your dentist (or Oral Surgeon) beforehand so he can let you know what to expect.

To get the good drugs, you'll probably need to go to an Oral Surgeon instead of a general Dentist. The drug choice is mostly made according to how much anxiety you show, so if I were doing it again I'd be sure to let them know I was really, really anxious. The only "hurt" that I felt was during the 3 days healing process and it wasn't that bad. Your tooth is called "impacted" because it is growing on a collision course toward or into another tooth. Basically since tooth pain is one of the worst kinds (all bone pain is) you can know for certain that it is more painful to leave it in there without doing anything about it.

Here's a link for you to check out: Wisdom teeth removal

Your upper left molar is numbered (by a tooth numbering system) as #16, your lower left third molar is called #17. If it is growing toward the front it is called a 'mesial impaction', growing toward the back would be a distal impaction. When you go to the dentist they will ask you what you're there for. Answer them by saying, "I suspect a mesial impaction on #16." They'll get a big kick outta that. Dentists are easily amused.

I think my price of letting this done is around a 1000 dollars or up.

I'm scared to death for needles, not to mention the dentist himself.

But anyway, this reminded me of the dentist making xray pictures of my mouth the last 3 times I've been there. He looked at them closely for a couple of seconds and then grumbled something like "hmm ok".
This just made me realize it's my wisdom teeth he was looking at.

Damn! I just hope his ignorance is positive :(

I had em out last Easter. Both top and bottoms out.
Sat in the chair.
Put the laughing gas mask on me.
Fell asleep.
Woke up.
Felt fine.
Went home.
Drooled everywhere cause I had to rinse my mouth, but it was numb.
At about 5pm was eating soup that a friend of mine that had had the same op a couple months before.
Next day felt fine, was eating pizza.

Then again. My girlfriend had her wisdoms out (she had 5 for some reason), and she was swollen for a week.
The friend that came over, wasn't even put under for the op.

So...matter of luck I guess.
Ooh, I got a sexy ex-staff title!

the operation itself is no pain at all
i dunno if u still go to school but i do :)
and when i had them pulled out, it was a monday, and i was all swollen the rest of the week, so i could stay home 8)
but the operation hurts maybe the first day after the operation
letting them in will cause a lot more pain for longer time

I was just talking to my parents about it then. They said they won't pay for it and that i have to simply "tough it out". If i want it done i have to pay for it myself. Considering im a tafe student and earn very little money, i can hardly afford it. It's a good thing

I meant besides the cost of the operation. After thinking about it for a good hour after my post, I felt in the back of my mouth and it kinda feels good, like well positioned. I don't know though :(
