I recently bought a 2GB cruzer micro for school projects and a game to fit on there, When i check the properties of the USB it says "1.86gb" which is the apparent storage room. I was just wondering, if its a 2GB USB, wheres the rest?

Thanks.

Your Windows has eated that :P

Your Drive is standard 2GB but when you format it into ntfs file system it just cashes some of that memory

Or, there are utilities on the drive (I remember some format like m3 or something that used to do that) taking up the extra space.

You should buy a cheap drive (like $5) And use it for school.

Yes, you can delete all that crap on the U3 drives if you want. You can even repartition the whole thumb drive and format it to get the most use of the available space. However, as someone above mentioned, the actual file system itself (NTFS, FAT32, EXT3...) will still take up some room on the drive. Probably the only way around that is to not even have a file system and write directly to the raw drive.

There's also the issue of how the vendor (and the OS) reports the free space. Some people refer to 1 GB as 1,000 MB, others say it's 1,024 MB. So that 2 gig drive might really be 2,000,000,000 bytes, which is a bit less than 2 gigs.

Yeah, that's the main reason. My 320 GB hard disk actually doesn't even have 300 GB. Its the difference between GB (x1000 factor) and GiB (x1024 factor). For ease, it is called the GB but in fact, windows uses the GiB factor, causing the difference.
