My grandfather was a Chinese diplomat towards vietnam. He stayed there and opened up a business after the cultural revolution. That whole side of the family grew up in Vietnam, but learned cantonese to speak to my grandfather and people who worked in his house, and went to private mandarin school. My family is culturally Chinese.
My dad still has uncles that are generals and other high positions in the Chinese army and in the party. But when my grandfather decided to stay in Vietnam, he upset my great grandfather and they never talked again - and our side of the family has become more or less seperated.
But, my grandfather's three wives were Vietnamese.
