Programs I use in windows:

For Firefox users: Noscript + Adblock Plus plugins make firefox the safest browser with no ads around 8)

Launchy (keystroke launcher). My desktop is almost empty now except for explorer and the recycle bin thanks to this program.
http://www.launchy.net/

Autohotkey
http://www.autohotkey.com/
* Automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write a mouse or keyboard macro by hand or use the macro recorder.
* Create hotkeys for keyboard, joystick, and mouse. Virtually any key, button, or combination can become a hotkey.
* Expand abbreviations as you type them. For example, typing "btw" can automatically produce "by the way".
* Create custom data-entry forms, user interfaces, and menu bars. See GUI for details.
* Remap keys and buttons on your keyboard, joystick, and mouse.
* Respond to signals from hand-held remote controls via the WinLIRC client script.
* Run existing AutoIt v2 scripts and enhance them with new capabilities.
* Convert any script into an EXE file that can be run on computers that don't have AutoHotkey installed.

Autohotkey took me a while to learn how to use but once you learn how to use it, it's pretty useful. And I still haven't figured out alot of the features yet. :p

paint.net - quick image retouches, more features than ms paint but lighter than gimp or photoshop
http://www.getpaint.net/

sharpreader - rss aggregator
http://www.sharpreader.net/

7-zip - best program that i've used for extracting zip/rar files.
http://www.7-zip.org/

poweriso - will mount some disc images you probably won't be able to open with daemon tools. Lightweight as well.
http://www.poweriso.com/

autoruns - controls what programs start at bootup, allows you to start up faster if you're on a slower machine
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysint ... oRuns.mspx

As for mac...I pretty much use ichat 90% of the time. lol :p

I'm a big fan of apps like Launchy, but recently I've been trying out Enso and loving it. Enso is a command interface, not a launcher, so it is capable of delivering a lot more functionality. It still offers access to your start menu programs and favorites, but it also lets you do things like controlling windows and manipulating text. It plays nice with fullscreen games too, so I can use all of its functionality while I play. Unfortunately, it is $20 after the 30-day trial period.

There is also Colibri, which seems a lot like Quicksilver, although it hasn't quite bloomed yet.

Speaking of launcher apps, how could you forget Quicksilver? It is incredible.

Now for some other awesome apps:

1) Cygwin
2) Turns your Windows machine into a vicious Windows-Linux hybrid.
3) http://www.cygwin.com/

1) UnixUtils
2) Less intense alternative to Cygwin.
3) http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/

1) GnuWin32
2) Individual GNU utilities.
3) http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/

1) Super-sed (ssed)
2) It's like sed, but with PERL-style regex.
3) http://sed.sourceforge.net/grabbag/ssed/

1) Sysinternals Utilities
2) Powerful utilities for Windows.
3) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

1) PowerToys for Windows XP
2) Extras from Microsoft including TweakUI and a Virtual Desktop Manager.
3) http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Free web hosting with no ads
http://www.po.gs/

Pretty good ad based hosting
http://www.x10hosting.com/

note neither of these would handle a silkroadforums or anything close. Best starter site links I have found in a while though.

Foobar2000 - Highly customizable music player. It's kind of like the firefox of music players. You can add your own plugins in the form of dlls. Very low resource footprint. The best music player I've used of among any OS. Too bad it's Windows only. :(

http://www.foobar2000.org/
Forum - http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php

It's also being actively developed unlike musikcube.

Here's my layout (it's pretty basic, there are alot more fancier layouts):
