A cop was walking past a restaurant when he heard someone scream - "No John, not the gun!" He ran inside and and saw a doctor, a lawyer, a milkman, and a dead body on the floor. He promptly walked over to the milkman and arrested him. He didn't witness the shooting and there was no apparent evidence to prove who shot the person and no one told him who the killer was. How did the policeman instantly know it was the milkman?

Unfortunately, James is an Eskimo who lives in a very remote part of Greenland and the import rules there forbid any package longer than 4 feet to be imported. The fishing rod was 4 feet and 1 inch, just a little too long, so how can the fishing rod be mailed to James without breaking the rules? Ideally James would like the fishing rod to arrive in one piece!

4 foot x 4 foot box

The rod would be slightly bent during transit, but they are meant to flex.

well to clarify what I said, you put it from one corner to the opposite corner, because that measure is longer than 4 feet even if the package is only 4 feet long.

Fishing rods generally break down into a two-piece rod and a reel, and even if they didn't they are flexible enough to fit in a package just an inch smaller. Although I'm sure the answer you were looking for is to package it diagonally. That's a third grade riddle right there.
