I fail to see how the piratebay is going "down" due to this. The quote "owners" have been the jail before, and the so called impending fine on them will be payed off by their investors.

If anyone else bothered to watch the movie they released about piratebay a year or two ago, many would know that their servers for hosting torrents are:
a) mostly in secret locations
b) scattered around the world
c) funded by some shifty, resourceful people

So no, I really doubt PB is going down anytime soon.

Every single song, album game and program I own, I have bought myself. Sure, you can get stuff for free, but I feel like a jerk if I do it. I work a dam tiring job and I work hard. Very hard. With the money I earn, I like to splurge a little at times. I'll buy a few cd's, maybe an anime DVD or too, and just sit back and enjoy myself for a few hours. I appreciate it more because I've worked for it, it has a value bestowed into it that is more than the simple tasks it can perform for me.

But I didn't really want to be involved in some big discussion here, I've beat this dead horse too many times before. I'm not really trying to say that it's 'morally wrong' to download stuff, rather that it's not as hard to buy things as an alternative.

What I'd like to add without getting into some legality argument is I love the concept behind what a torrent offers. It's a great platform for the transfer of insanely large files between a widespread community of people, I think the technology is amazing. Pirate Bay was a torrent sight, right? If so, it's a shame it was used for such illegal transfers and shut down accordingly.

you got a point over there.. but if you take a look at the age 14 ~ 18 most of them cant afford buying those stuff.. your correct nothing feels better when you buy something with your money that you worked hard for.. but always remember people from age 18~28 have more responsibilities than wasting their money on games or Cd's.. not every one can afford a 70$ game.. and when you provide them with a program that can download what ever you want for free ofc they will choose free.. also a lot of people and i am one of them have the mentality if its free why would i waste my money on it ?.. morally that's a different story does this count as stealing i think it does..

downloading an album, or game is really the equivilant of borrowing it from a friend. if someone likes it they will buy their own.

this is true for me at least, because of games i have gotten "illegally" that i thought were so-so and that i didn't think was worth buying i later, after playing them and enjoying them bought the game, which i wouldn't have if i hadn't had the chance to play it.

exactly. this is the case especially now with every game becoming very internet dependent to fully enjoy the game. i have sampled games, i can only play single player functions and look forward to buying the game to enjoy the MP functions. lawsuits like this is a means to make examples of people. it is ultimately a means to gain more and more control.

your correct nothing feels better when you buy something with your money that you worked hard for.. but always remember people from age 18~28 have more responsibilities than wasting their money on games or Cd's.. not every one can afford a 70$ game..

I'm 21. I have a lot of bills, I have a $17,000 car loan and I'm saving up for my own house. I'm also a student, too. And yet, despite this, I can still afford it. Make a budget, manage your income and learn to save. There's no excuse for being lazy, affording a $10 CD once a week isn't too darn hard dammit.

Anyone of any age can afford a CD every now and then. If your so deprived that no matter how hard you try you can't spare $10 every now and then for a CD, than I really doubt that the highest priority in your life is listening to the new Pink album. If you can't afford it, learn to live without. Hell, I have 3000 odd songs on itunes and even that is way too much for me. We don't need 50,000 songs, 10,000 movies and every single PS3 release game. Moderation: it's a dam fine thing.

Getting a job is not exactly hard. Maintaining your studies and have a job can be. I simply don't have a job during the school year because I know I won't have enough time with all the homework.

It's not that black-and-white at all. I'm 22 and own a car, house, and have a very well-paying job, but I've also been pirating for 10 years now since the days of Napster (since I was 12). It's more than just a simple money issue or job situation. While there are numerous reasons to why people pirate, it's usually because pirating requires very little effort on the user's part now and its this accessibility that has greatly contributed to its popularity.

Quick experiment:

Let's take a popular album, 'Recovery', by Eminem. Go to Google and start typing 'Eminem Recovery'. As you finish typing, the Google search will then give you further suggestions for lyrics, tracklist, or torrent.



Once the user clicks on that last suggestion, the search results will yield numerous options from which to pirate the material from. That's all it takes. Its stupid easy and requires almost no effort whatsoever to do that. What could be more appealing than instant gratification?

As poetic as it may be, some subjective emotional response to purchasing material with hard-earned money is not much of an incentive to keep people from pirating. In fact, it's rather inconsequential, because in the end the only thing that matters is if you spent that hard-earned cash wisely or foolishly based on the content of your purchase. When buying a CD/DVD/Blu Ray, you're paying the music/film studio for the right to listen or watch the material (not actually own it). You also pay for that physical copy to be made, packed, delivered, and stocked at your local brick-and-mortar shop. For someone who values their hard-earned money, I fail to see how buying physical copies of music or film is the logical choice here (assuming when you say CD you're referring to physical copies). Online music vendors have become increasingly popular because they've been able to combine accessibility and competitively priced goods that make for a very attractive buying method, especially for the younger generation that is more digitally-inclined.

Personally, I've discovered a ton of music and bands that I would probably never know existed through pirating from private music tracker communities. If I have the option (and if I enjoy the music), I will donate directly to the bands and the donation amount is usually much more than I would have payed for a physical or digital copy of their music. A few years back, a Microsoft exec said, "If you're going to steal software, steal from us", his point being that the biggest asset of their platform is the user, and even if their Windows copy is pirated, they're still users who usually end up buying a copy of the OS later on. While that may not be true all the time, it's at least true some of the time, and it's that 'some' that stimulates growth of the user base.

To be honest, I don't think TPB will shut down, maybe go down for a little while yes, but its (possibly) one of the most used torrent sites there are.

Imo as it has already been said torrents actually gives time to "test" w/e you torrented. Which I believe is a good idea to a certain extent.
