For it to be an extension of the line, the stick would need to touch the line, and that is a no no.

i've got an answer
did the little boy tell the soldiers to look at the line on an angle? it would appear longer, but remain the same measurement

The boy held his stick just above the ground, so that the stick began where the line ended. Thus it would seem, at least from a standing position, that the stick was a continuation and an extension of the line.

What I mean is that the shadow becomes the expansion of the line in the dirt.
