Could it be that he feels vulnerable? His first reaction was to maneuver to keep the obstacle (a light pole) between them. I mean, your son's first reaction to an ex-con jumping around was wishing he chambered a bullet in his gun.
A lot of people feel more powerful when carrying a gun and although you will probably deny it's the same for your son I believe it is.
Funny thing but he knows to take me at face value when I speak.
I return the same respect to him.
Could it be that there is some deep seated feeling of inadequacy that he is overcompensating for?

I agree with the Americans are fear-crazed more. Look at all the Hollywood movies that depict us that way. Just watch the news. It's kinda sad.
