I started "smoking" around what was it, 10?? but that was just being all "Cool" and "awesome" with rolling up papers to a cigarette shape and smoke it after school. boo hoo.

Then when I was 14 I truely started smoking, just because I was like, I like smoking, I enjoy it when somebody lights a cigarette around me and I breathe in smoke, so I bought a pack and started smoking.

Why did I start? Was it the $220 million dollars a year in ad revenues and constant bombarding? Was it 'star power'? Did I want to be cool? (Did I smoke "Kools"?) What about the coupons in Raleigh cigarettes and all the 'rewards'? Bel-Air's had coupons too? Was it the secondary addiction to menthol?

I used to steal cigarettes from my mom's purse. Both of my parents smoked. I remember one morning on the way to school I complained to my mom that my ankle hurt and asked her to look at it - thinking I might have sprained it. Was it swollen? I was actually mortified when I pulled down my sock and two (2) of her cigarettes dropped to the floor. Did I really want attention from my parents?

There is no need in me to attempt to say this was 'right'. Smoking is neither right nor wrong. Doesn't matter to me if millions of people argue about it. I've smoked in front of every pastor that I've known; smoke in front of God and anybody. To me, the 'wrongness' would be if I hid what I did. My example of stealing and hiding what I was doing demonstrates the 'wrongness' of my action. It would be wrong if I were to give more respect to your opinion than I did to God's.

The question was 'How did you start?' My reply was focused on the influences that my twelve (12) year old mind was subject to, not that I was 'right' and certainly not an attempt to justify my actions. Prior to that I'd ask you to clearly define by what authority you make your demand.

Pardon me for expressing my convictions directly to you - it wasn't really meant as a personal attack. I do remember one guy who came out to the 'smoking shack' and started in on a co-worker. His argument was that the poor who smoked shouldn't get any assistance (food stamps) if they smoked. To him, smoking was so great an offense that he had to come outside and say that he'd rather see children go hungry if their parents were tobacco addicts.

I still see red when I consider how much hatred can be generated by this. I was stupid to start, wish I wouldn't have and am certain that overall I would be happier had I been able to quit.
