I started because it was there. I liked the act of it, the connotation with it, and the general feeling out outsmarting my parents =X

Jstar1 wrote:ive always wondered how people start, especially since its so obvious that smoking is going to kill you. I want to smoke but when i think of lung cancer, etc. I dont feel like it
this made me chuckle.
Don't drive, it will kill you.
Don't use an airplane - it may rash and you may die
Always use a helmet - you might die from a sudden thing falling on your head while doing anything.
Don't cross the street, you can get killed.
Don't use bridges - they might collapse.
WTF is this shit. I smoke, I love it, and hell with it, I'll die anyways.
My attitude is long live fun, short live me - no Farking wrinkles.
^Yes I'm a retard^
But you only live for a certain amount of time you are destined to, and You're also destined to make the right choice that suits you.
Defy Destiny. There's no such thing. Someone comes up to you and says: "It's your damn destiny to save the universe!!!!!111" your reaction is: "Your point is? I refuse, so hey, it must be my destiny to ignore this shit."
Oh boo hoo hoo.
Smoke or don't. Like it or don't, But saying it's bad for you to let people stop smoking, hey, that's just how the great design was planned. No one can change your destiny, not even you, because it was your destiny to think you changed your destiny, while it was just all planned out.
Walk the path layed out to you, and hey, who cares if you start smoking, or stop smoking, you hate it, or love it, but that doesn't matter. Bullshit.
/end lecture.. I went pretty off topic, right? whatever.
I started "smoking" around what was it, 10?? but that was just being all "Cool" and "awesome" with rolling up papers to a cigarette shape and smoke it after school. boo hoo.
Then when I was 14 I truely started smoking, just because I was like, I like smoking, I enjoy it when somebody lights a cigarette around me and I breathe in smoke, so I bought a pack and started smoking.
Simple as that.

No, cuz my so called "destiny" planned it that way.
There's no escaping. every choice you make was never a choice to start with..

Re: How did you start.
Smoked a cig or two in late high school. Shit sucked. Smoking weed is better.

Re: How did you start.
In the US, the last cigarette commercial aired on New Year's day 1971. You'd need to be almost 40 years old to have seen it.
"Winston Tastes Good Like a Cigarette Should" (Winston)
"You've Come a Long Way, Baby" (Virginia Slims)
One of the major sponsors for The Flintstones was a cigarette company.
Our hero's were seen on Television lighting up constantly.
John Wayne (he's a dead cowboy now).
Mary Tyler Moore too.
"My name is Bond, James Bond."
"Come to where the flavor is" (Marlboro)
"Blow some my way" (Chesterfield)
"I'd rather fight than switch" (Tareyton)
My favorite shirt had two vertical stripes and I called it my "Tareyton Shirt".
Many don't know that Marlboro cigarettes (famous for their Marlboro Man) was first marketed as a woman's cigarette. There were subliminal images employed (Camel) and there was a direct correlation between drinking, smoking and 'getting the girl'.
Why did I start? Was it the $220 million dollars a year in ad revenues and constant bombarding? Was it 'star power'? Did I want to be cool? (Did I smoke "Kools"?) What about the coupons in Raleigh cigarettes and all the 'rewards'? Bel-Air's had coupons too? Was it the secondary addiction to menthol?
I used to steal cigarettes from my mom's purse. Both of my parents smoked. I remember one morning on the way to school I complained to my mom that my ankle hurt and asked her to look at it - thinking I might have sprained it. Was it swollen? I was actually mortified when I pulled down my sock and two (2) of her cigarettes dropped to the floor. Did I really want attention from my parents?
Answer: All of the above.

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff until you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait,
But you just gotta have another cigarette

And your being so extreme trying to make your point. No one wears a helmet while walking around because no one expect to get killed by a falling object while doing walking to your friends house. You smoke even though its clearly obvious your going to day one day. I love how smokers jump left and right to try to justify smoking.

Is that how you see it?
Dictionary.com wrote:JUSTIFY
1. to show (an act, claim, statement, etc.) to be just or right: "The end does not always justify the means."
2. to defend or uphold as warranted or well-grounded: "Don't try to justify his rudeness."
3. Theology: to declare innocent or guiltless; absolve; acquit.
–verb (used without object)
5. Law.a. to show a satisfactory reason or excuse for something done.
b. to qualify as bail or surety.
There is no need in me to attempt to say this was 'right'. Smoking is neither right nor wrong. Doesn't matter to me if millions of people argue about it. I've smoked in front of every pastor that I've known; smoke in front of God and anybody. To me, the 'wrongness' would be if I hid what I did. My example of stealing and hiding what I was doing demonstrates the 'wrongness' of my action. It would be wrong if I were to give more respect to your opinion than I did to God's.
The question was 'How did you start?' My reply was focused on the influences that my twelve (12) year old mind was subject to, not that I was 'right' and certainly not an attempt to justify my actions. Prior to that I'd ask you to clearly define by what authority you make your demand.

Oh, then I owe you an apology then.Jstar1 wrote:^i wasnt replying to your post, I didnt read it all of it.
Pardon me for expressing my convictions directly to you - it wasn't really meant as a personal attack. I do remember one guy who came out to the 'smoking shack' and started in on a co-worker. His argument was that the poor who smoked shouldn't get any assistance (food stamps) if they smoked. To him, smoking was so great an offense that he had to come outside and say that he'd rather see children go hungry if their parents were tobacco addicts.
I still see red when I consider how much hatred can be generated by this. I was stupid to start, wish I wouldn't have and am certain that overall I would be happier had I been able to quit.
~Granps
PS - Cigarettes were $0.25 per pack when I started.
There was a pack of Pall-Mall included in a soldier's rations during WWII.
