You guys missed the deeper meaning in all the entertainment stuff, well only in the first part

The Matrix is a clever modern day remake of the bible
The Matrix is everywhere. You can feel it.

(Bible:God, that means God= Matrix)
(The movie was released on Easter weekend (holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.)

Some quotes:

You were born into bondage and slavery. (Ezra 9:9a)

Remember Moses or jesus telling the people to start rising up?

Morpheus: “There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.” (Isaiah 2:3)
“I can’t tell you how its going to end, but I can tell you how its going to begin.”
(1 Corinthians 2:9)

“The world doesn’t exist. Its VR is designed to lull us into lives of blind obedience to the system.” (John 12:40; 2 Corinthians 4:4)

“Rest, the answers are coming.”
(Matthew 11:28-29)

Morpheus: “Welcome to the real world.”
Neo: “Am I dead?”
Morpheus: “No far from it.” (Morpheus) (1 Corinthians 15:22)
“If you are [who they say you are] is this going to be a good thing?”
“Everybody falls the first time.”
“I can show you the door, but you have to open it.” (Matthew 7:7)
“The answer is looking for you and it’ll find you.” (John 3:8)
“You know that road, you know where it ends, that’s not where you wanna be.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
“All I’m offering is the truth.” (Truth isn’t easy, it’s dangerous. Refer to the NT Concordance.)

What biblical character does each Matrix character most closely represent. And why?

Apoc - Image
Short for Apocalypse, translating to The Revelation, or revealing of the truth.

Bane Image
meaning "nemesis" or "enemy."

Cain and Abel Image
(the Merovingian's two vampire henchmen) - Cain and Abel were the first two children (the children of Adam and Eve) in the Old Testament. Also a popular "hacking" program.

Charra Image
(defender of Zion, woman with bazooka) (Spanish for "cowgirl)."

Captain Soren -
A reference to Søren Kierkegaard, the philosopher, originator of the concept and terminology of the "leap of faith" and often regarded as one of the fathers of existentialism.
He used the pseudonym Vigilius Haufniensis ("watchman of the harbour) which also links to the ship's name.

Captain Thadeus
(commands the Osiris, as seen in the Animatrix) - Thaddeus is one of the names for Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost or desperate causes.

Cypher - Judas or Demon Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss.Image
Cypher betrays with a celphone and a sneeze. Cypher sounds like Lucifer.
Demon: Visual cues - goatee, red spots reflecting in his glasses like red pupils (seen upon return from Oracle), when sitting on Morpheus with headset on, light reflects on headset like little horns.
He was the only character to wear red clothing.
Cypher: "Don't hate me, Trinity. I'm just a messenger." Satan called himself the messenger.
Cypher's deal with the Agents = selling his soul for material pleasures = a deal with the devil.

MorpheusImage
“God of the Under World”
looks for “The One” his whole life
believes so blindly he’ll die to save Neo

NeoImage
Neo Jesus the son Choi: "Hallelujah. You're my savior, man. My own personal Jesus Christ." Neo dies, and returns to life. He is the second coming, sent to save the people.
In the gospels, two days after Jesus died, he resurrected and roamed the lands for 40 days breaking bread, appearing to people to tell them about the truth of salvation, showing them the miracle of life, and on the 40th day, he ressurected, soul AND body up into heaven.
In the Matrix, 2 minutes after Neo dies, he ressurects, and now roams the matrix and he is going to show the people of the land the truth about their lives and how it isn't the end, it's just the beginning.
At the very end of the movie, Neo flies UP into the sky, which seems very similar to Jesus' rising up into the sky and leaving the earth physically as well as his soul.>>

OracleImage
The Oracle - The Delphic Oracle All the prophets and sybils on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, including the Delphic Oracle, foretold the coming of the Messiah.

Seraph Image
A "Seraph" is a member of the "Seraphim" (Σεραφείμ), the highest order of the hierarchy of angels in medieval Christian theology (among other angelic designations from other faiths/belief systems. See Seraph for more.).

Smith Image
In an early scene in The Matrix Reloaded, Smith drives an Audi A8 with the license plate number "IS 5416"; in the King James Bible Isaiah 54:16 reads "Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy."
It should be noted that the three Agents' names in The Matrix (Smith, Jones and Brown) are all very common surnames.

Tank - The Virgin Mary?Image
or Lazarus Virgin Mary: Tank says he is 100% pure (er, old-fashioned homegrown human.)
He acts as the communicator between two worlds. He is portrayed as kind and good-hearted.
He could pass as Mary perhaps, or even more specifically, the Mexican Virgin Mary (Guadalupe), a loving brown messenger sent to console and galvanize her people. Lazarus: Resurrected from the dead by a miracle.

Thomas Anderson - Doubting Thomas Image
Doubting Thomas did not believe Jesus had died and been resurrected until he saw the wounds. Thomas/Neo is shot, does not feel it until he sees the wound, dies momentarily, and then believes he is the One.

TrinityImage
(Trinity= God as three people: Father Son and Holy Spirit)
“The Holy Spirit”, Mary
loving, caring, directing

Zion - last human city ZionImage
Biblical city Psalms 48 - "Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.
Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. God is known in her palaces for a refuge."

Now the plot

The hero, Thomas Anderson, is the Everyman who also has a dual identity under his hacker name, Neo (=new man). We later learn in the film that he is the chosen One (= the messiah). He dresses in a black duster, sort of a cross between the angels in "City of the Angels" and the mystical hero in all of Clint Eastwood's westerns.

Morpheus (= I will be what I will be) is the father image, the champion of Zion, leader of the rebel forces. He is determined to set his people free through the chosen one. Not only is he a father figure, he is also a forerunner to Neo, announcing his coming, in this way he is a type of John the Baptist.

Trinity is capable of supernatural fight and flight! If Morpheus can be the father/God image, and Neo the dual-nature/Son image, then Trinity is the Spirit. As her name implies, the three are inseparable. One for all and all for one. Trinity is also the name of the Terence Stamp character in his 1970s western series called Trinity, which is part of the modern mythology from which this picture borrows. Also, as a follower of Neo she serves as a Mary Magdalene type.

At the center of earth is their 'holy city,' Zion, which in the Bible is Jerusalem -the city of God. The rebel forces, called Zionist, defend Zion from the Matrix.

The two worlds, one visible and the other not, is a running theme throughout the Bible. In both Matrix and the Bible, dreams can connect a person to the other dimension.

The rebel ship is named after the biblical Nebuchadnezzar, the greatest and most powerful of all the Babylonian kings. His name means, "Nebo, protect the crown!" or the "frontiers." A perfect name for the rebel ship.

The term AI, means artificial intelligence. In the Bible Ai was the scene of Joshua’s defeat, and afterwards of his victory - in the film as well.

The biggest biblical parallel comes at the end of the movie when Neo is shot dead and then is resurrected to life again. A direct reference to the life of Jesus Christ.

The resurrection scene also borrows from "Sleeping Beauty" with a twist. Instead of the male prince kissing the woman, Trinity kisses Neo. Clever twist. The resurrection transforms Neo. He now has the ability to render the Matrix useless: System failure. The Neo man, like Truman, Jesus, and Superman defeats the system.

there still is some random stuff, but that the stuff you learn at school in Germany :P

Well, the first part : "The Matrix" was intended to be like that,
released on easter and all those scenes and the "talk about you are the one" and most of all, the suspicious name((Lu)cypher, Nebuchadnezzar and so on all directly refer to the bible
(in my case, i read the bible and those names all stay put  )

and the info leaked out only a week after the film was released. :)

but the last two films were mostly pure action, although The Architect appears ther to, so
they just added some historical trivia to the story.

Edit:it is kinda fun to see that at least some people in hollywood think about something else than action at the set :),
with all thehigh quality time wasting shite they churn out these days

heres some more backround stuff, although it doesn't refer to the bible, rather to other historical figures that actually existed.

Captain Ajax (commands the Icarus).
A reference to the Greek hero Ajax in Homer's Iliad.

Captain Thadeus(commands the Osiris, as seen in the Animatrix)
Thaddeus is one of the names for Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost or desperate causes.

Captain Ballard
A reference to J. G. Ballard, the British novelist and forerunner of the cyberpunk movement in literature which inspired The Matrix.

Malachi
Meaning "My messenger/angel". Malachi was the last of the minor prophets and writer of the last book of the Old Testament.

The Merovingian Image
The Merovingians were a dynasty of Frankish kings who ruled parts of France and Germany from the 5th to the 8th century AD. According to some fictional accounts, for example the novel The Da Vinci Code, the Merovingians claimed descent from Jesus Christ.
The Merovingian is also characterized fairly heavily as Hades -- Lord of the Underworld. In Greek mythology, Hades is married to Persephone.

PersephoneImage
Greek mythology states that the goddess Persephone (Περσεφόνη) was taken to the underworld by Hades; she was the beautiful and lonely bride of a monster - Hades himself.
Her mother, Demeter (Δήμητρα) , goddess of the harvest, pled for her daughter's company; Hades, moved, allowed his wife to return from the underworld for six months a year.
During the other half, Demeter mourns and winter reigns.

The ArchitectImage
A software architect is someone who designs computer systems at a high level, and The Architect is assumed to have designed the Matrix itself, but was unable to do so on his own; this is where The Oracle came in.
"The Architect" is also a name for God commonly used by the Freemasons.

Mifune
In honor of Toshiro Mifune, an actor that played many Samurai in Japanese films.

Choi (played by Marc Gray) is putatively a bluepill who appears in the first movie buying illegal software from Neo, for which Choi pays $US 2,000 in cash.
Choi, his latex-clad girlfriend Dujour (played by Ada Nicodemou) and several unnamed and unspeaking friends arrive at Neo's door just after he had been mysteriously told to "follow the white rabbit". When Neo notices that Dujour has a tattoo of a white rabbit on the back of her left shoulder, he accepts their offer to go with them to a goth club
Image

Rama Kandra - A reference to the Hindu figure Rama Kandra, one of the avatars of Vishnu.

Kamala - A reference to Kamala, one of the Krittikas, or Pleiades, in Hindu epic the Mahabharata. It is also another name of the Hindu goddesses Lakshmi and Durga.

Captain Kali - Kali is a Hindu goddess who is said to feed on the bodies of the dead on battlefields. The consort of Shiva, Kali counterbalances life with death.

sry but i couldn't give you any shots of some characters,(but at least theres Monica Bellucci :D )

Now invision this: an african american male walking up to an Itlaian 6x catholic priest after yelling "allusions brah" in a church of all places. The Matrix movies are loaded with biblical references. To add to Pan Raider's comments, here's some more interesting details about the license plates;

License plates in The Matrix

The Twins’ truck on the freeway: DE2852. Deutronomy 28:52 – “They shall besiege you in all your towns, until your high and fortified walls, in which you trusted, come down throughout all your land. And they shall besiege you in all your towns throughout all your land, which the LORD your God has given you.”

Trinity and Morpheus’ Cadillac on the freeway: DA203. Daniel 2:03 – “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means.”

Agent Smith’s Audi at the beginning: IS5416. Isaiah 54:16 – “Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.”

Found that on a forum a while back. :)

its a movie designed over multiple levels so it can appeal to everyone but if you wish to look deeper you can look at the psychology & philosophy behind it, it is extremly complicated.

It has many relative links to our modern world and relates to Isaac Asimov's laws of robotics and how they could go wrong it also relates to the common prediction that AI will eventually be able to make its own individule and collective decisions whether they are violent towards us or not

and this is just scratching the surface you can go far deeper as deep as you want when looking into it

who knows we could be in a 'matrix' now, but dont call me insane you cannot prove me wrong!

Lol i understood it after like watching the 3 parts for the 3rd time or something..

-Earth is f*cked
-Robots are the ones that f*cked Earth (or was it humans..dont really remember..the points is that its f*cked)
-Matrix is designed to sorta put humans to sleep while robots control them to kinda...well..do something pretty evil with them (dont really remember)
-Some humans managed to escape this whole thing.
-Some kung-fu/computer/technology-sh1t heroes step in to save the day..believing in some "you are the one" stuff.
-As predicted of course..some ppl doubt them/they have enemies.
-As predicted as well...they turned out to be right & they did save the day.
-Neo gets superman powers and kicks everyone's asses.

Movie is nice lol but it had a little bit too much "i believe i can fly" kind of attitude.

Loved the referrals thing BTW.

lol, "Moshe"
Biblical reference to Moses, the Law Giver. This is his Hebrew name, not "Charlton", contrary to the belief of my generation... "Set my people free"... lol.
I gots the CDs <~~ wanting to get them out and have a Matrix-n-popcorn night again.

Question: "Concept: I am the one" <~~~ is there anything to say that "Neo" is symbolic of a group or class of people? Can "he" be thought of as many? I'll look with this in mind, but am hazy on the whole thing atm.

I think it was like:

''What happened, happened and it couldn't have happened any other way''

''How do you know that?''

''Because we are still alive''
''When I die, make sure they bury me upside down, so that the world can kiss my ass.''

I think they never intended to make a movie full of deep meaning and stuff, or they did but never this elaborated. I could probably find hints of brilliance in Hannah Montana lyrics if I look hard enough. The proof that it's just another science fiction movie that got blown out of proportions by fanboys: they casted Keanu Reeves as Neo.

My favorite Matrix quote would be:
Neo: I know kung fu.
Morpheus: Show me.
