Basically because we realize we are smart, our brain takes shortcuts in finding solutions faster than we can make sure if said shortcuts are correct. In the end we make mistakes because we are too smart for our own good.
That's why considering the question of the bat and the ball, the first answer to pop into most peoples heads is 10 cents (because in your head you have 1.10 and 1$, your brain takes the quick shortcut of subtracting the two for the answer even though that's incorrect). Of course this is just more reason to ALWAYS double check your answers for anything. It really takes a fraction of a second to do so..
