New York (CNN) -- A cashier at a New York fast food restaurant has been charged with felony assault for beating two unruly customers with a metal object during an argument.
The women remain hospitalized in serious condition, police said.
The incident occurred at a McDonald's on West 3rd Street about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The two 24-year-old women entered the store, placed their order and then began arguing with the cashier, 31-year-old Rayon McIntosh, police said.
CNN affiliate WCBS said the altercation began when the cashier questioned a $50 bill the women gave him. They responded by hurling obscenities at him.
A cell phone video shows how the situation quickly escalated.
One of the women curses at the cashier, then reaches over and slaps his face.
The woman then climbs over the counter, sending the cashier running toward the kitchen area. The other woman walks around to join her friend.
The cashier then suddenly reappears with what police described as a metal object and repeatedly hits the women.
Restaurant patrons scream for him to stop, while other employees try to intervene.
The video, one minute and 10 seconds long, shows the cashier hitting the women 10 times as they lay on the floor.
"Stop! Stop!" one woman screams. "Stop it! Call the cops!"
The cashier would pause and begin again every time the women tried to get up.
The two women suffered lacerations to their head and face and were taken to a hospital, police said. CNN affiliates said one had a fractured skull and a broken arm; the other had a deep laceration
Authorities identified them as Denise Darbeau and Rachael Edwards, and charged them with menacing, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
The franchise owner Carmen Paulino told CNN affiliate WABC that the cashier no longer works at the restaurant.
"I am extremely disturbed by the events captured on tape and am concerned for those injured," Paulino said. "The actions of this individual are unacceptale and not characteristic of my employees."
McDonald's too released a statement, saying the franchisee is cooperating with the investigation.
"The violence in this video is alarming and reprehensible," it said.
They got what they deserved. The guy that jumped over the counter started it by hitting the MCD employee first and the girl thought YEAH IM A TOUGH BITCH IMA GET IN THERE FCK YEA!

It was more than slap as they jumped the counter. I see the guy as a hero as they could have been robbers. He hit them so they couldn't get up, and when they tried to get he hit them again. He dealt with it just right as he didn't kill them, just immobilized them.
You know what I think when I see 2 females aggressively charging at me ? OT: He could've went a bit overboard on the beating, but he wasn't completely in the wrong. Get assaulted, you try to remove yourself from the situation, and the one's assaulting you follow you to continue? Yeah, you get a free pass to open a whole sale can of whoop ass on them at that point.
His criminal past has no relevance for this situation and is only used to entice an emotional response so you'd jump on the bandwagon against him.
We should stop treating people like objects, or at least treat our objects with more respect.

Could have, but the video doesn't really show that. Which is why I gave my opinion based on what I could see. Without knowing the exact context, it's hard to pick a side. The Audio Sucks ass in it as well.
Basically the first few hits were self defense but after that (when he didnt cool down) it was assault because he was beating them when they were already down imo. And no, i dont think they would have got back up and started attacking him again after getting flattened by a metal rod.
And your criminal records are always accounted for it everything. they basically stick to you for the rest of your life, which can be good and bad at the same time.

I feel like every company should have a policy that insist if a customer steps behind the counter lethal force can be applied to remove or deter them. Then maybe people would think twice before total cunts. They probably won't cause they're cunts but at last you'll be able to defend yourself without fear of going to jail.

The people who set these company policies on how their worker should treat the customers are far removed from the situation...That's the major problem. The customer shouldav attacked an upper management personnel who happens to be on site for his/her annual visit to the franchise. That would be priceless.

No, part of the job is inevitably dealing with peoples shit but that's not supposed to be a requirement. People like you have this sense of entitlement that you can treat people like shit for whatever reason and so cashiers are forced to deal with it. Where you gained this sense of entitlement I don't know. Probably the same place where you gained that ridiculous line of " Quit....freedom in america" Both of which seem like they came straight from someones asshole...

And in the fantasy world where houses pay for themselves, food magically appears on tables and university fees don't exist than maybe they could just quit. In some places finding a job is incredibly hard to do and you have to take what you can get. No one deserves to be an outlet for someone else's rage, I've heard some stories from friends of mine who do customer service and the way they get treated is outrageous.

I work as a meat clerk, and I've been told that if I were given shit from a customer, I have the right to call management to have them removed from the store
