I tend to stay away from anything Apple.. but if you really want an iPhone, just pay for one without a contract. You can find a newish used one for a pretty good price. That way when or if the iPhone5 comes out this year, you can buy that with contract price.

As for the whole Apple debockle; anything made by Apple is completely useless. Every product they have made is mediocre and overpriced. Hell my $350 Acer netbook is faster than a $1000+ MacBook Air. Apple products are a fad, and only look cool.

The only thing I own from them is an iPod Touch 2g. It is literally the damn same thing as an iPhone.. it has it's own texting number & phone number and has my 3g internet from my tethered android phone (when needed.)

MBAs are actually ridiculously quick for web browsing/word processing/regular netbook usage; faster than my Q8800 PC, iMac, and Macbook Pro.

I bought my mom a netbook for mother's day and while my experience with netbooks is limited to that model, it doesn't even compare to an MBA. The MBA is netbook size (with a 15 inch resolution) but competes with regular full sized laptops, not netbooks.

The new MacBook air's with those solid state HD's seem pretty cool. But even then I'd choose my netbook over that because of functionality. My netbook has 3 USB slots, an HDMI output, VGA, ethernet, and a card reader. The MBA just has 2 USB slots lol.

As dom pointed out, the Total is after the price cut plus the laptop being part of a Web Special deal. The actual retail value is $2,170 with those specifications.

also macbooks vs laptops in my opinion arent even a comparison, if you ask a unbiased person what the great features are about a mac in terms of technical ability they would likely say its media capabilities... i had to use these features of a mac in my music tech course and if i had to get a laptop mac, i know that a lot of those features would be removed... a midi connector is like 10x the height of a macbook air lol and midi connectors are almost essential for music technicians.

No, your proposition was to find a Mac-based computer that was less expensive than an equivalent Windows-based one. You can move the goalposts all you want, but it doesn't change your original statement. Furthermore, raw components will always be less expensive than a pre-built machine put together by a company. It's the added price of convenience, not a ripoff. But if you do feel they're robbing you blind, then by all means brush up on your soldering and machining skills to make that ultraportable of your dreams.

There are legitimate situations in which having a Mac of any kind would be inconvenient, but your anecdote is not one of them as there are adapters widely available for MIDI interfaces. You're drawing more conclusions than your experience warrants. It all boils down to how much value you as individual believe you will get out of your purchase.

yes there are adapters and other interfaces you can use but again thats another way apple enjoy taking money off you, you might as well get that product for windows using a window based software. Pro Tools is a leading digital... workshop?(i guess thats what you would call it lol) and it worked great on a mac but the support for windows is not getting better so even buying a mac for the operating system isnt a viable reason to spend the money.

admitingly for laptops its a little harder to build your own, but generally laptops are cheaper anyway, however i still wouldnt ever buy another laptop from a firm pre-installed again. ive had so many issues from dell (who wanted me to cough up £180 for a replacement 80gig hard-drive which i brought for £30 at the time...) there was no convenience from them who expected me to install the drive myself once i brought it from them

Here's an opinion from someone who has owned both a MacBook and a Windows based laptop. First of all the Mac cost twice as much as my Dell laptop, priced at 2,600 NZD and 1,250 NZD respectively. They both had a similar processor - dual-core i5 something-something, 4 gb of ram, same size display etc. So all the specs were basically the same on these two laptops yet the Mac cost more than double the Dell. So I wondered where all my money went and discovered that the only difference was that the Apple on the cover of the Mac lights up.

But jokes aside there's nothing that I can do on a Mac that I can't on my Dell. Also I prefer Windows over the Mac OS, so there's my 2 cents.

OnTopic: OP, don't buy an iPhone. Same as the laptops, you can buy something equally good, if not better, for a fraction of the cost. Since you're only buying it to 'facilitate my study' you don't need an iPhone. A lot of my friends have an iPhone and I think its just too much ($$) for too little. Don't get me wrong, its a great product but the price is just too damn high. However if you really want one either buy it 2nd hand, wait for a new iPhone (I'm almost positive there will be one) or buy the older version, iPhone 3GS.

Retail computer manufactures (not just Apple) sell pre-built systems because people who have no interest at all in building their own computers make up the majority. Personally, I can build my own computer and have done so in the past numerous times for myself and other people. However, simply because I can does not mean I should. Being a tech junkie doesn't mean you willingly give up any shred of convenience for larger numbers, and since my wallet allows it, I will purchase any product I want at my heart's content because it is enjoyable to me.

How would third-party adapters help Apple? If you are on a budget or financial restraint of some sort, then by all means buy a Windows-based computer. Even if you're not, then buy that blue-light special laptop you've had your eye on. How difficult is it to accept other people just prefer a choice that you do not? That's really all there is to it. And if you were as pragmatic as you're implying, you wouldn't even bother using Windows in the first place as Linux distros offer much more flexible options.

No, what I'm saying is that the MBA is on a different level entirely than netbooks. Not because it is an Apple product, but because it is an ultraportable, of which there are many of other brands. Like I said, this discussion is fruitless unless you understand the differences between the technologies in these two product categories.

i use win7 and ubuntu... w7 on my main pc to avoid the compatability issues it has running some w7 applications, ubuntu for my laptop. i used mac for my music tech course, we had 18 mac's ordered in for our class and we already had imacs and mac laptops before hand and every single mac caused a problem for the majority of our class in one way or another. only out of experience is my opinion on their products, i dont know anyone who has not had an issue with itunes or an ipod either

if you buy a mac without a midi connection on it, then you have to buy one... which you could of done with a windows operating system... i say windows and not linux because ive used protools on a windows OS and not on a linux, im unsure if it works there.
oh and just because you have money to splash around on buying expensive things, doesnt necessarily mean you should. doing your research before buying any product is a good idea and for electronic items i would highly recommend doing research before hand
