I could just show you all the files that they did not have the copyrights to.

Ah, that's what I thought you meant. I totally agree.
That's why I asked you to explain.

You're assuming they downloaded any files. They simply provided the service that allowed people to search for downloads (both illegal and legal).

And it's the illegal ones that are costing them the money and the jail time. BTW how does a web site like Pirate Bay make money?
Re: PirateBay going down.
They are a torrent search engine.
That would be like arresting the Google founders for allowing someone to search and download kid porn.
AFAIK - the pirate bay contained no content on their site, it is simply a search engine.

Very true. But they must have done something wrong if they are getting jailed and fined millions.

I don't doubt that you could* show me what a profiting group claims to have absolute rights over and really let me know this with a group of armed men that are not there to prevent violence ( on the contrary ) but to ensure that x group keeps profiting out of a resource who's only limit is in the mind of those who believe there is one.
I would say is also important to point out that these "products" only have this artificial value thanks to violence ( the abuse and oppression of other human beings not in self defense ) and corruption, by itself these would articulate in a much different manner.
I think I'll drop a couple of words on this at a later date ( maybe ) but I honestly don't like pointing out obvious things.

That's a lot of money, does they earn that much
Well with over 4million registered users, they are bound of have something close to that from advertisement, not sure how long the site has been running though, but if they have 4 million users I would imagine they have been in business for more then a year at least.
edit: not sure if anyone has seen this

Re: PirateBay going down.
Haven't they already proven that pirating doesn't hurt sales. People who pirate weren't going to buy the product in the first place, so the company didn't lose anything. Or in some cases people will pirate a copy to demo it and go on to buy it if they like it so they don't waste their money on rubbish(aka anything MS)
Since when did being able to sing a 2 minute song entitle you to have millions of dollars anyways? Our soldiers risk their lives everyday and I can assure you combat pay isn't anywhere near what most people in the movie and music industry make in a week.
Giving this... I really don't get how they could be put in jail or fined, especially since they didn't actually provide any illegal material. Just one more step forward for the people in control to gain more control.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but buying stuff from a store really isn't all that hard. Honestly.

90% of the stuff I've torrented I would have never bought in the first place.
In other words, with or without the free access, the creator of the content would never see a penny from me.

They have taken the fall instead of its 4 million users involved in illegal activities. Hence the massive donation campagne they ran.

it depends when you can buy a game with 50$ from a store.. on the other hand get it for free which one will you choose? a average album is like 15$ or 20$ you can download 50 of them for free.. and specially when it comes down to programs for example you have Sony Vegas it costs like 600$ LOL or you can get it for free =) its tempting..

so right.. but i think it actually helps them by making the program or game more popular i guess..

Yeah, most rappers wanted people to pirate their stuff. They knew if ppl were stealing it, they most like it, and it would spread. I think that's what a lot of the mix tape stuff was all about... and it's not like they can torrent a T-Shirt or going to a concert.

it is encouraged by people like Tech N9ne as a blow to the industry. which does infact rape and pimp most performers and then throw them away like a used sanitary napkin.

Every single song, album game and program I own, I have bought myself. Sure, you can get stuff for free, but I feel like a jerk if I do it. I work a dam tiring job and I work hard. Very hard. With the money I earn, I like to splurge a little at times. I'll buy a few cd's, maybe an anime DVD or too, and just sit back and enjoy myself for a few hours. I appreciate it more because I've worked for it, it has a value bestowed into it that is more than the simple tasks it can perform for me.
But I didn't really want to be involved in some big discussion here, I've beat this dead horse too many times before. I'm not really trying to say that it's 'morally wrong' to download stuff, rather that it's not as hard to buy things as an alternative.
What I'd like to add without getting into some legality argument is I love the concept behind what a torrent offers. It's a great platform for the transfer of insanely large files between a widespread community of people, I think the technology is amazing. Pirate Bay was a torrent sight, right? If so, it's a shame it was used for such illegal transfers and shut down accordingly.

downloading an album, or game is really the equivilant of borrowing it from a friend. if someone likes it they will buy their own.

this is true for me at least, because of games i have gotten "illegally" that i thought were so-so and that i didn't think was worth buying i later, after playing them and enjoying them bought the game, which i wouldn't have if i hadn't had the chance to play it.

exactly. this is the case especially now with every game becoming very internet dependent to fully enjoy the game. i have sampled games, i can only play single player functions and look forward to buying the game to enjoy the MP functions. lawsuits like this is a means to make examples of people. it is ultimately a means to gain more and more control.
